Things to Ponder

First, Happy Mother’s Day to all our moms, grand moms, and great grand moms, and possible we have some great great grand moms! We hope your day is special!!

I read where 89 “Christian” universities and colleges have closed their doors in the period from 2017 through March 28, 2023. In the brotherhood, Cascade college and Magnolia Bible college closed in 2009. Western Christian college closed in 2012 and Ohio Valley college in 2022. Magnolia recently reopened in a smaller setting and is no longer accredited by SACS. There are 19 colleges and universities with church of Christ ties that remain open.

Fourteen congregations have closed within a 100-mile radius of us since the early 90s. Several congregations in our area have less than twenty members and are struggling to hang on. The preacher shortage is very real with more congregations in need than there are preachers! I know of two congregations within 45 minutes’ drive time from here who are looking for full time ministers.

Many denominational groups are struggling much worse than we. What is the answer? For our faithful colleges and universities, let us encourage our young people to attend. I know tuition is high, but all offer scholarships, grants, and work programs to help in greatly reducing the costs. Three good ones near us are Ameridge, Freed-Hardeman, and Harding.

We need to be outward focused and not inward focused in our congregations. Invite others to attend, share the good news of Jesus and the New Testament church, and faithfully support your local congregation with your attendance, talents, time, and money. Bring up our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and let us be a positive example to them. Please stress the importance of the Bible being our standard and Jesus Christ our Lord.

We need to encourage our young people to become leaders in the church. We need preachers, teachers, lecturers, professors, elders, deacons, song leaders, and VBS and summer camp personnel. Let us remember we need to continue to fill all our support personnel such as cooks, greeters, nursery staff, and maintenance people.

“Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest” (John 4:35, NKJV; emphasis mine)!

Where Is Your Heart?

Psalm 19 is a wonderful passage of Scripture to read and meditate upon. Verses 7-9 teach us: “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether” (NKJV; Thomas Nelson Publishing, 1982).

Dear friend, where is your heart? Does reading and meditating on God’s word cause your heart to rejoice? Does studying the Word cause you to examine yourself and make necessary corrections if needed? Do you have reverence for the almighty God? Are you willing to humbly submit to Him?

Only you and God know the answers to these questions! Approximately 180 million Americans are unchurched. Twenty-five percent of Americans, 82 million, are Nones (no religious affiliation). Eight percent of the US population are agnostics or atheists (26 million). The Nones , agnostics, and atheists are included in the 180 million total (The Unchurched Next Door, Thom Rainer; Wikipedia: Irreligion in the United States).

Fewer people are reading and believing the Word of God! Many consider daily Bible reading a chore and something to dread. Bible literacy in America continues to fall at an alarming rate. Do you consider reading the Bible a dreaded task? Do you understand what you are reading? Are you looking for answers? Where is your heart?

Consider the final verse from Psalm 19: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer” (NKJV). Where is your heart dear friend?

Where Do I Start?

That is an interesting question, is it not? Where do we start to find purpose and fulfillment in our lives? It all begins with knowing and loving God! The wise man teaches, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). The fear of the Lord means we understand who God is and humble ourselves before Him with proper reverence and respect.

We learn of God from observing nature and all of its amazing ways. Please read Psalm 8 and 19 and consider the teachings of Romans chapter 1. These chapters from God’s Word proclaim what nature teaches one who is willing to learn. We grow in our knowledge of God, how the world was created, and how we came about from the Holy Bible. We see God working with mankind through the ages and His love and provision for us. We see what happens when God is obeyed and what happens when God is disobeyed (Deuteronomy chapters 7 and 8 are good examples of this).

God shows His love for man from Genesis 1 through Revelation 22. The first mention of a coming Savior is found in Genesis 3:15 and of course we all know the beautiful words of John 3:16,17. Romans 5:8 reminds us of how much our awesome loving God cares, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. How many of us would be willing to give up our only child for people who had mistreated their son in such a despicable way? Yet, Jesus even asked His Father to forgive those who had crucified Him and were mocking Him as He hung on that cross (Luke 23:34)!

Where do I start? Where do we start? By getting to know God through His word and coming to an understanding of how much He cares for us and how much He wants to give us true meaning, purpose, and direction in our lives. It is not found in money, fame, popularity, possessions, or long life. It is only found in total surrender to Jesus Christ!

Where are you dear friend? When we believe and obey the gospel of Christ Jesus and make Him the Lord of our lives, we will truly live now and for all eternity in Heaven with our God! What about you?

Something to Consider

Brother Chase Green, in his meeting at Beacon last week, made this remark, “I go to church, the minister preaches, and I go home. That is what Christians do now” (quote attributed to Don Wildmon). Brother Chase was trying to drive home a very good point- as Christians many have lost their focus!

Too many believe just going to church one to three times a week is all we need! Just show up, get our ticket punched, and all is well with our soul and God. What lies Satan has deluded us with! Being a Christian is our life! We are not our own, we were bought at a price (1 Corinthians 6:20,7:23). Jesus is either our Lord or His is not our Lord. “Why do you call Me Lord, Lord, and do not what I say” (Luke 6:46, NASV).

Playing at Christianity will get you killed! We are either all in or we are all out! There is no halfway. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon”. (Matthew 6:24 NKJV).

Where are you dear friend? Have you become a Christian by believing and obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ? Are you trying to live with one foot in the world and one foot in the church? Are you concerned for the lost in the community in which you live? Are you happy with the way you are now?

The day is coming when Jesus is going to return, and the world will come to an end. All will stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of his /her life. No one knows when that will occur. The day is also coming when our physical bodies will die. Whatever state with God our soul is in will determine where we will spend eternity. The hour of our death and the time of the coming of our Lord are both unknown to us. It could be today, tomorrow, or some future time, but it is coming! We need to be prepared so whenever our death or the Lord’s return occur, we are ready!

Where do you stand today? Are you covered by the blood of the Lamb? If not, what are YOU waiting for? Your soul stands in peril of being lost forever! Come to Jesus and obey His blest commands.

Take Time

As you wake up on a weekday morning, what is on your mind?

If you are like most folks, it is: "I'm running late", "I've got to get the kids to school", "I haven't got breakfast ready and the school bus is almost here", or "I'm not even dressed yet, I am going to be so late for work".

We live in such a fast-paced world. I have such empathy for our young parents trying to juggle careers, school, spouses, and children. It is not an easy job and not for the faint at heart.

Someone told me, "I wake up in a rush, fly around all day and by the time it's 10:30 PM, I simply collapse in my bed. Then, the alarm clock goes off and it's off to the races once more". Friends, that is a tough way to live!

I want to encourage you to find time (even if it is just 5-10 minutes each day) to reflect on your life. Where you want to go, what is important to you, and what you are thankful for! Today, tell others how much they mean to you, help someone in need, and take time out for your family.

Be sure and remember God loves you and wants the best for you! Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope".

Recent Days

Last Friday and Saturday at the Men’s Retreat at Chemin-A-Haut state park were amazing. We had seven outstanding speakers, delicious meals, and fabulous fellowship. The singing was excellent, and we shook the rafters with our loud voices as we praised God and exhorted each other with the songs. The attendance was superb as our members showed up and we were supported by many area congregations.

I especially want to thank our deacons: Steve Barnhill, Jake Maxwell, Mike Williams, and Brannon Smith for their hard work.

Our gospel meeting with brother Brad Harrub met all our expectations and then some! We shattered previous attendance records and had 6 responses. Brother Brad also has one ongoing Bible study due to our meeting and we had a baptism Monday afternoon. Area congregations were extremely supportive. Our members showed up and the ladies (and some men) cooked their hearts out preparing plenty of food for all.

The ice cream social after Tuesday evening’s service was truly a treat for all. During the meeting, we campaigned with flyers and encouraged our community to come hear the truth of God’s word. Our members invited and brought many guests. Social media was enlisted to get the words out to thousands. Thanks to everyone for your hard work and prayers. It truly paid off with huge dividends.

Now, where do we go from here? Several men and I plan to continue door knocking, handing out tracts, and inviting our community to come and join us in New Testament Christianity. Prayers will continue to go up to God to help us as we strive to take our communities in which we live back to the Lord.

What about YOU? Will you dedicate yourself to supporting Naff Avenue in your attendance, prayers, and evangelistic efforts? Will you support faithful area congregations when they host meetings, seminars, cook-outs, and singings? Will you invite others? Will you read, study, and obey the commands of the New Testament? Will you fortify your families? “That you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15).

A Lesson For Us

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3, NKJV).

Friends, love is the key for what truly matters in life. We love God because He first loved us and created us for fellowship with Him (1 John 4:19; Genesis 1:27; Colossians 3:10). Because we love the Lord, we want to do everything we can to please Him. In fact, Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments (John 14:15). We want our love for Christ shining through our words and actions so the world can see Jesus (Matthew 5:16; 2 Corinthians 5:20).

What a difference we can make for the kingdom, when we love God, love the brethren, and love our fellow man. People will notice we truly are a “peculiar people” (Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 2:9 KJV). We love even when we are not loved in return. We respond in kindness, not in hatred. We do not partake in drinking alcoholic beverages, going to night clubs, or dances. Filthy words do not leave our lips and our goal is not pleasure for ourselves but serving the almighty God.

It is time for us to stand up and be counted as those who love God despite the costs (Luke 14:27-29). Let us stop micromanaging and take people where they are and not where we think they should be. Let us love them, study God’s word with them, and encourage them. Let us work to bring the lost to Jesus and strengthen our brethren who are discouraged. Let us rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15).

Our Gospel Meeting

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things” (Romans 10:14,15 NKJV)!

What beautiful words Paul wrote as directed by the Holy Spirit to the Christians in Rome! Our men’s retreat and gospel meeting are upon us. Are you ready? Have you considered praying everyday from now and throughout these events that souls will be saved? Are you willing to invite family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and fellow students to come to our meetings? Would you be willing to pass out flyers in your respective areas in which you live?

These events are a great way to introduce someone to the Lord’s church! Many are not familiar with New Testament Christianity as outlined by God’s word. Morehouse and Ouachita parish along with Bastrop, Sterlington, and Monroe (as well as the entire world) are in such dire need of knowing the simplicity that is in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 11:3).

Lord willing, we have seven godly men who will cover the entire book of James at our retreat. Likewise in our gospel meeting, we have Brad Harrub who will conduct six lessons on “fortifying our families” during these tumultuous times. These lessons will be an encouragement to all who hear them.

Great Things We Can Do

If you are like me, I often wonder about what I can do for the Lord and His kingdom. Here are some simple things we can do that will help others, perhaps lead a soul to Jesus, and lift your spirits as well.

First , we have several of our members and friends who are shut-ins, in nursing homes, in assisted living, and in rehab facilities. Let us take time to pray for them daily, make phone calls, and send cards of encouragement. Even better and highly recommended, let us go by and visit them. We can listen to them and let them know how much we care for them. I promise this will be a blessing to them and to you.

Remember, Jesus said, “I was sick and you visited me…And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me” (Matthew 25:36b,40 NKJV).

Second , we know we need to be working in our communities for the Lord, but often we are not sure how to accomplish this. Here is an easy thing to do: invite your friends and neighbors to our church services. The number one reason visitors attend is because someone invited them. Let that someone be you.

We have a men’s retreat on March 17th and 18th with our gospel meeting starting on the 19th and going through the 22nd. This is a perfect opportunity to invite, friends, neighbors, and coworkers to these wonderful events. We have flyers available to pass out in our various respective neighborhoods in which we live.

Third , let us be on the lookout for people who are searching for answers. Perhaps, they have lost a loved one, had financial setbacks, or going through some other “rough patch”. Let us offer to study the Bible with them. In home Bible studies are a great way to help people know the truth of God’s word. We simply take people where they are at and show them God’s way through His Holy Word “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). If you need help with this, I will be glad to assist you.

Friends, these are things we can do to help those in need, the lost, and further the Lord’s kingdom. Are you willing?

For the Sick and Hurting

My cousin passed away Sunday morning a week ago. He was a good man, and I knew him all my life. He was 82 and left behind a wife and three children. One of his daughters lost her husband to cancer a couple of years ago and now her dad is gone as well. Likewise, many of us are sick, hurting (physically, mentally, spiritually, or financially), have lost loved ones, and have relatives going through hard times.

Life on this earth is not easy. Job said, “Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble” (Job 14:1). Friends, all of us sooner or later are going to face severe trials in this life. These difficult times will do one of two things: make our faith and character stronger or weaken our faith and diminish our character, some to the point of giving up.

How are we as Christians to respond to the harshness and setbacks in life? One, remember we have Jesus! This Jesus who promised we would have tribulation in this world but to be of good cheer for He has overcome the world (John 16:33). This same Jesus Who promised He would never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5, Matthew 28:20). The writer of Hebrews teaches, “so that we may boldly say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me (Hebrews 13:6)?

As Christians, we need to pray to God through Jesus to give us wisdom, peace, and strength during these challenging times. We need to read Scriptures pertaining to God’s comfort, peace, and help to those in need. We need to believe those verses and take them to heart. We need to reach out to our brothers and sisters in Christ for spiritual and emotional support (Romans 12:15). We need to be kind and gentle with ourselves during these times of grief (Mark 12:31). Please give yourself permission to avail all of these tools as we all struggle with the challenges of life.

Finally, let us always strive to love one another as God so loves us. Please finish the race set before you, for Heaven will surely be worth it all.

Good Enough to go to Heaven?

How many Christians wonder, “Am I good enough to go to heaven”? Have I tried hard enough? Do I always do my best? Is there some unspoken sin I forgot to ask God to forgive me of? Why do I still feel less than and inadequate when I do my best? Am I really saved? Am I missing something?

Do we ask ourselves these questions? I know I have in the past and probably will again in the future. Many of us feel we must “work our way to Heaven”. If we do not, then we believe there is an excellent chance we will be disappointed tremendously on Judgment Day.

Here is the truth- Not one of else is or will ever be good enough to go to Heaven (Romans 3:23, 6:23). We are not perfect, and we will never be. We need to let go of this ball and chain. If we hold on to this mindset, we will never have peace of mind or have assurance of our salvation.

We are lost until we believe and obey the gospel of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:6; Acts 2:38-41; 1 Corinthians 15:1-3). We get that part and then we think, “Well as a Christian I must do a certain amount of good works, or I will not get in”. But how much is enough?

It is hard for us to wrap our minds around God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8,9). It is a free gift which seems too good to be true, but it is. The Romans and other Christians wanted to take it too far the other way- sin more, so grace can abound more! Paul put a stop to that in Romans 6:1-7.

So, what do we as Christians do? Understand, we are saved by God’s grace when we are baptized into Jesus (Galatians 3:27; Revelation 1:5). We arise from that watery grave a new creation so the past no longer defines us or condemns us (2 Corinthians 5:17, 21). We know we have eternal life because we are in Jesus and continue in our walk with Him (1 John 5:5-9; 5:13).

Friends, stop listening to the accusations of Satan! Concentrate on God’s word and what it says! It is the righteousness of Jesus that makes us right with God. Romans’ chapters 6-8 tells us what we are to do to stay in the proper relationship with God. Please carefully read and study these three chapters. I will be happy to study them with you if you are so minded.

The Future of the Church

When you hear these words, “the future of the church” what comes to your mind? Many would say our young people and rightly so. Our young are to replace us as we grow old and pass from this life by maturing and becoming workers for the Lord.

We were so pleased with the results of our recent Bible Bowl! We had 95 in attendance and 32 young people participating. Three groups never missed a single question and one group only missed one. It was obvious to all; these young men and women had taken the task seriously and studied the Bible hard in preparation of the contest (2 Timothy 2:15).

The Bowl was also a time of fellowship between the various congregations present. Many of the young people are friends and enjoyed seeing each other again. It is an encouragement to them that there are other young people of like mind. In school, our youngsters may feel like a “dinosaur” because they do not believe, talk, or act like their peers. Meetings such as these help our young people to understand there are others seeking to please the Lord and to stay the course.

Summer camps such as Camp Ark La Tex in Minden and Camp Kurios in Eldorado serve vital functions of teaching and encouraging our youth. Many have developed friendships for life and some even have boyfriend/girlfriend relationships as a result.

Let us continue to support our youth and fellowship between congregations of the Lord’s church. I would love to see a Saturday when we could gather to play kickball for fun. Perhaps, we could make teams up by picking members from the various congregations, so it was not a “us versus them” but simply a time to play, have fun, and enjoy the blessings God has given us.

Time is short and we truly are in a war for the hearts and minds of our young. Let us strive to teach ours as Timothy was taught: “And from childhood thou hast known the Hoy Scriptures which are able to make one wise unto salvation though faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15).

The Right Order

“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman

named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat

at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she

approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?

Therefore tell her to help me” (Luke 10:38-40, NKJV).

Can’t you just picture this scene in your mind? Martha is so busy trying to have food and drink

prepared for Jesus and his disciples. Such important guests deserve the best she has to offer,

and Martha is at the breaking point trying to get all these things done. The food, the drinks,

the table setting, the cooking, the washing, and the cleaning! It is enough to push one over the

edge.

To top it all off, there is her sister Mary not lifting one finger to help her. Instead, Mary is

literally sitting at Jesus’ feet while He teaches! This is too much! Martha asks Jesus to

intervene on her behalf. Jesus’ answer must have stunned her.

“And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about

many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be

taken away from her” (Luke 10:41,42, NKJV).

Friends, sometimes we just need to hold our horses and slow down. Sometimes we just need

to stop trying to do everything and concentrate on doing the right thing- listening to Jesus!

There is a right order, and it is simply this- “But, continually seek first His kingdom and His

righteousness and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV).

How about you? Are you frazzled and frustrated? Are you spinning you wheels and going

nowhere fast? Please consider Jesus’ advice to Martha and His wonderful invitation found in

Matthew 11:28-30.

Ready To Go!

America is a very mobile society. We move every 5 to seven years sometimes from one

coast to the next. Usually, when we move, we have it all laid out. We know where we are

going, we have a job waiting for us, and we have a place to live ready for our arrival.

Have you ever thought about Abraham? He was happy living with his friends and relatives

in the wonderful land of Haran. All is right with the world and Abraham probably believes

he will be there till the day he dies, BUT God has other plans for this man!

God calls Abraham (Abram as he was known then) to, “Get thee out of thy country, and

from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will

make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou

shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee:

and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:1-3; KJV).

Abram does not know where he is going, what he and his family will encounter, or any sort

of time schedule of when he will arrive. Yet he simply goes (Genesis 12:4,5)! What faith he

displayed!

What about us? Would we have went if we had got the call? Friends, God has called us!

We are called by the call of the gospel (2 Thessalonians 2:14)! How have you answered?

Are you living by faith (Hebrews 11:1-6)? Where will eternity find you?

Let us believe, obey, and stay faithful to the Lord and His word. Let us live for Jesus!

I wanted to use this bulletin article to simply tell you how much I appreciate each and every one of you! Karen and I want to say thank you for the cards, foods, and gifts you gave us during the course of last year. We especially appreciate the wonderful card and generous money offering you gave us on New Year’s Day of this year. You will never know how much all of this meant to us!

But the love and support you have demonstrated towards us means even more. We are blessed to be a part of a congregation that is so loving and kindhearted toward us and each other. It is a joy to serve as your minister and as one of the elders of a congregation such as Naff Avenue. It is an encouragement to have such an engaged congregation who is so active in serving the Lord! We are using our wonderful facility to worship the Lord on Sundays, hold men and women’s Bible studies, a school of Biblical studies, area wide preacher’s meetings each month, Bible Bowl, gospel meetings, and many other encouraging endeavors for the Lord and His church.

We have a website and YouTube page where we proclaim the Lord and His kingdom. Our members are doing outreach within our community to encourage, educate, and bring lost souls to Jesus. Make the Most of Your Time

“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17 NKJV).

Since we only have a limited number of days here on this earth, as Christians, we must be careful how we walk (i.e., live our lives). The verb form of the Greek word Paul uses in verse 15 above means a “continuous or repeated action”. “The days are evil” means we live in an evil world under the influence of Satan (1 John 5:19). Also, our lives on this earth are “but a vapor” (James 4:14).

For these reasons, we are to be wise in what we think, say, and do. We accomplish this by understanding “what the will of the Lord is”. Jesus proclaimed, “Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter” (Matthew 7:21).

How do we know what the Father’s will is for our lives? Is it what Mom or Dad teaches? Our friends? What we feel is right in our heart? Friends, we know God’s will by studying His Word, The Holy Bible. The Old Testament teaches us about many things, but its purpose is to point us to Jesus (Galatians 3:24-27). Christ is now our law, and we live under His new covenant.

Today, the only way we can know the “will of the Lord” is by reading, believing, and obeying the New Testament. If we do this daily, we will fulfill the command of Ephesians quoted in the above first paragraph. If we continue to do this unto death, Heaven will be our eternal abode.

Moving Forward

2022 was a good year in many ways for our congregation. We had nine baptisms, three restorations, and seventeen place membership. Attendance was good as was the contribution. We love God, love each other, and love the lost. We care for our community and provide for those in need. We strive to be a congregation of the New Testament church and proclaim the truth of God’s word. There is unity here and we care.

Upcoming events for 2023 are read the Bible through in a year, ArkLaMiss School of Biblical Studies every Thursday night, Ruston college ministry conducts morning services January 22, Bible Bowl is February 4th, Preachers meeting every 2nd Monday of the month at 10:30, Ladies Bible study 2nd Tuesday of the month, Men’s Bible study 3rd Tuesday of the month, Men’s Retreat March 17,18, and gospel meeting with Brad Harrub March 19-22.

We are a active congregation! We are also looking forward to church camp and VBS this summer. Fall activities are in the planning stages as well. God has blessed us with wonderful talented folks who are workers for the Lord.

How can you help? Let each of us pray daily and ask God to give us increase as we seek out the lost. Let us be as brother Keeble and ask for “just one more to be baptized into Jesus”. Let us read our Bibles and obey its commandments. Let us invite our friends, neighbors, classmates, and coworkers to worship with us. Let us look for opportunities to serve God and our fellow man.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace”. (Numbers 6:24-26 NKJV).

I cannot believe a New Year is now here! I hope 2022 was good for you and 2023 is even better! A New Year allows us to take stock of our lives and see where we have been, where we are, and where we want to go. This is an excellent time to reflect upon our lives so we can make appropriate adjustments to help us obtain our goals and what we consider important values in our lives.

For the world, New Year resolutions include losing weight, exercising, eating healthy, spending time with family, and reducing spending. These are all admirable goals, but what about the Christian? What should our goals for the New Year be?

May I suggest we consider dedicating ourselves to the following?

1) Thank God every day for the blessings we have in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3).

2) Remember as Christians, Jesus is our Lord and Heaven is our home (Luke 6:46; John 14:1-3,15).

3) Dedicate ourselves to reading the entire Bible over the course of this year (2 Timothy 2:15; Yes, you can do it).

4) Become prayer warriors, by carving out at least 15 minutes per day for deep prayer time with God.

5) Support your local congregation of the New Testament church with your attendance, talents, prayer, time, and money (Hebrew 10:24,25).

6) Love God and love our fellow man (Luke 10:27; Galatians 6:10).

Do this and we will truly have a productive 2023 for the Lord!

Tomorrow is the day when the world celebrates the birth of our blessed Savior! How I pray

every day is a blessed day as we recall the blessings we have in Christ Jesus (Ephesians

1:3).

Let us set our minds back 2,000 years as we remember the birth of Jesus: “And it came to

pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to

be registered, everyone to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of

David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be

registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they

were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her

firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because

there was no room for them in the inn.

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over

their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of

the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do

not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And

this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in

a manger” (Luke 2: 1-12 NKJV).

Friends, we do not know the actual date of Jesus’s birth. We celebrate every day that God

loved us enough to send His Son to this earth (John 3:16). Each and every Lord’s Day, we

remember Jesus’s love and sacrifice for us on that cruel cross of Calvary (1 Corinthians 11:

23-26) when we partake of the Lord’s Supper.

Sunday Morning Only Christians

First off, this article is NOT for people who must work on Sunday, those who are home bound,

those who are sick, or those who because of health issues can only come to one service on Sunday and then are so physically exhausted or in such pain they are not able to attend the other service. It is also not intended for those who have vision issues and cannot drive at night.

This article IS for those who simply choose not to attend other services or participate in any of our church related functions such as gospel meetings, men’s retreat, VBS, Bible Bowl, ladies Bible study, or men’s Bible study.

A preacher friend called me this week with a problem. He informed me they had a great youth

group (i.e., many kids of various ages), but they rarely could get many of them at the services with any regularity. The parents usually brought them just to the morning worship (not Bible class) and that was it. As he put it, “the parents are Sunday morning only Christians and they are teaching their youngsters to become the same when they grow up”. He said it was discouraging to him, the elders, the deacons, and some members (those who faithfully attend).

His congregation is developing a strategy to help combat this terrible malady and he and I discussed some possible solutions. This congregation is not alone in this. Many congregations are suffering from poor attendance, apathy, and despair. Please do not let this happen to you or our congregation here at Naff Avenue. If you are simply choosing not to attend or participate, please reconsider! You very soul is at stake!

The Lord has blessed us with a wonderful building, members who love the Lord and one another, faithful teaching and preaching by our members, and many outreach programs. Will you please continue to avail yourself to the Lord and to us? It is time for us to rise up and work!

This Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us. For many, it is the most wonderful time of the year. For others, it is a time of sadness and despair. Wherever you are this holiday season, please know God loves you and so do we!

As Christians, we are to be the ambassadors of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:20). Let us not get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season, we lose our focus on what are the truly important and eternal things. In everything, let others see Christ in us. By the way we talk, by our actions, and by our thoughts, let us be filled with love for God and love for our fellow man. Let us be looking for opportunities to help others (Galatians 6:10).

This world needs folks who give others a second chance. People who are slow to judge and quick to encourage. Men and women, boys and girls who are patient, longsuffering, and who look for the good in all. What a different world this would be!

What a different church we would be! Friends, we are here to serve God and do His will (Ecclesiastes 12:13,14). It is our prayer this holiday season is the best ever for you and your family. We pray you and yours have health and safety as you gather together. Let us put God first and be an encouragement to all we encounter.

Let us strive to deny ourselves and follow Jesus (Matthew 16:24). Do this and we shall truly live, now and for all eternity!

Doing Good Deeds

I believe we all need good news to bolster us in this negative world in which we live. Two events have come to my attention this week concerning love in action here in our beloved community.

The first involves a person who became ill. A church member heard of the illness and prepared enough delicious and hearty food to last for several meals. This simply act blessed all parties involved and demonstrates what Jesus taught in Matthew 25:34-40.

The second incident concerns a large oak limb that fell in a yard. A member driving by saw the large limb and stopped and inquired if he might saw it up for firewood. The owner of the home was elated because she is a widow and informed the man, she had cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. She said she did not know how she was going to remove the large limb and was very grateful. Not only did our member remove the tree but also cleaned up her yard as well, to the homeowner’s delight.

These two examples demonstrate we do not have to do big things to bless others and in return receive a blessing as well. It is the simple things we all can do. A smile, a phone call, a card, a visit, preparing food, holding a door open, carrying groceries in or out, this is Christianity in action.

In closing, let us follow the example recorded in Galatians 6:10, “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith”.

Are You Allowing the Message to be Choked Out?

“Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful” (Mark 4: 18,19).

Jesus taught many wonderful messages by parables. A good way to think of a parable is “an earthly story with a heavenly message”. The Scripture quoted above is from the “parable of the Sower” or as some call it, “the parable of the soils”. The parable has great messages for us and is also found in Matthew 13 and Luke 8. The seed the sower spread was “the word of God” (Luke 8:11).

In this parable, Jesus declares there are four types of “hearts”, but only one receives God’s word, accepts God’s word, and allows God’s word to bear fruit. One of the saddest hearts to me is the one “who hears the word” and then allows “the thorns” to choke it out.

What are the things that choke out the word? Jesus proclaims “the cares of the world” will choke out the message in our lives. When we worry and concern ourselves more over earthly things than God and His will, we are doomed to fail.

“The deceitfulness of riches” will certainly choke out the message in our lives as well. When careers, cars, houses, money, and possessions are our focus, we choke out the word. Material goods do not bring us joy, peace, success, and eternal life! Only believing, obeying, and staying faithful to Christ’s gospel can do that! Please see 1 Timothy 6:6-9 for more on this.

Friends, who are YOU listening to? Is it the world and what it (Satan) teaches? Is it yourself and your wants and desires? Is it God and seeking to do His will? Are you choking the message out? Are you letting the message speak through you as you live every day for God? Choose God and truly ring the message out!

Thanksgiving

Can you believe it is time for the Thanksgiving holiday already? Despite all the craziness

2022 has brought, the year has still flown by.

Of all the holidays we celebrate in America, Thanksgiving is one of my favorites. There is

not all the hoopla about presents and gifts. Instead, we are focused on family and friends.

We are thankful to God for our blessings. We pause for a moment to reflect on what truly

matters: our love for God and love for others.

We come together to share a meal and our fellowship, devotion, and love for one

another. We enjoy delicious food, but more importantly each other. We laugh, joke,

reminiscent, and perhaps shed a tear as we pause to reflect upon our lives.

Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to reset our priorities and be grateful to our loving

Father and each other. It is my prayer as Thanksgiving begins the start of our holiday

season which concludes with New Year’s Day, may we stay focused on God, family, and

serving others.

May the teaching of Philippian’s 4:6,7 be our guide: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything

by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to

God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and

minds through Christ Jesus”.

Rules for a Joyful Life

Since God created us and made us to have fellowship with Him, we CANNOT have a joyful

life until we surrender all to Him by becoming a Christian and having Jesus as our Lord. This is

why so many millions of folks are miserable in their lives. They feel hollow and gutted on the

inside because they are! It is only by dying to self and putting on Christ when we are baptized

that we truly begin to live!

Sadly, many Christians are miserable in their lives as well. They are trying to live for self and

the world as well as stay faithful to God. This CANNOT be! They are conflicted and torn

because they are trying to serve two masters. Jesus said this CANNOT be done (Matthew

6:24). You must die to self to win (Matthew 16:24-26; Romans 6:3-7; Galatians 2:20;

Philippians 1:21).

When we die to self, Jesus can live in us. We get out of the way so God can work mightily

through us to accomplish His good will (Proverbs 3:5,6). We “forget ourselves” and love God

like never before and crave to please Him. We love our fellow man and look for opportunities

to serve and spread the gospel (Galatians 6:10; Matthew 28: 18-20).

Dear friends, where are YOU? If you have never heard, believed, and obeyed the gospel of

Jesus, YOU ARE LOST! Would you please contact us at Naff Avenue so we can arrange to

Have You Been to the Lord's Church?

Each week, millions of Americans travel to and attend all kinds of different religious organizations. But, have you been to the Lord’s church?

The Lord’s church was prophesied in Daniel 2:44, “And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever”. The prophet Joel wrote, “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” (Joel 2:28).

Jesus boldly proclaimed, “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). Note Jesus taught the church is singular in nature and the church is His church not some man’s. The church of our Lord came into being on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem circa 33 A.D. The apostle Peter confirms the fulfilment of Joel’s previous prophecy (Joel 2:28) and quotes those verses in Acts 2: 17 ff. As he concluded this powerful sermon, Peter is asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Notice Peter’s reply, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:37b, 38).

In Acts 2:41 we read, “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them”. Please observe those who believed were baptized the same day for the remission (forgiveness) of sins. “And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47b). Note the Lord, not man, adds to His church those who are saved.

Friends, it matters where you attend services. If your group is not the one prophesized in the Old Testament, you have not been to the Lord’s church. If where you attend is not founded on Jesus and Him as the Head of His church, you have not been to the Lord’s church. If your group votes to decide on who can join or be a candidate for baptism, you have not been to the Lord’s church. If your group does not practice Scriptural baptism, you have not been to the Lord’s church.

Can Your Feelings Be Your Guide?

Many today say they know they are saved because they can feel Jesus in their heart. Others

say they know what they are involved in is ok because God and I have an understanding

about my situation. Some religious groups encourage “free flow expression” during their

worship services where members can shout, sing, dance, and run up and down the aisles.

Can your feelings be your guide in religious matters? Can you worship on the Lord’s Day

as you see fit? Who has the authority to speak in such matters? Is it the preacher? Is it the

elders? Is it the national leaders of a particular religious denomination? Is it the members

themselves?

Friends, the truth is God is the only authority in these matters! God has given all authority

to Jesus and Jesus will judge us on the last day (Matthew 28:18; 2 Timothy 4:1). Jesus said

the words which He has spoken will judge us on the last day (John 12:48).

Our feelings are NOT our authority when it comes to salvation, worshipping God, and

pleasing Him. We must not add to or take away from the Holy Word (i.e., the Holy Bible).

Please see Deuteronomy 4:2, Proverbs 30:6, and Revelation 22:18,19 concerning this. It is

only when we follow God and His word, we are acceptable to God because we are doing it

His way and not ours. Christianity is not a Burger King religion. God states in Isaiah 55:8,

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts and my ways are not your ways”.

Are You Humble?

What does it mean to be humble? William Temple teaches, “Humility does not mean

thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of

your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking of yourself at all”. In America, we spend

way too much time thinking about ourselves and what we want. Abraham Lincoln said,

“What kills the skunk is the publicity it gives itself”. We should consider swallowing our

pride, for it is non-fattening!

The Bible goes in depth about being humble. 2 Chronicles 7:14 proclaims, “If My people

who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn

from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal

their land”.

James points out, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore, submit

to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw

near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you doubleminded”

(James 4:6b-8). Please note getting right with God and pleasing God all begins

with humility. We give up fighting God and submit to God’s way. We become a Christian

as commanded in the New Testament. We worship God as commanded in the New

Testament. We live our lives as commanded in the New Testament.

Man’s way is the wrong way (Proverbs 14:12; Luke 6:46; Acts 17:30,31). Friend, where

Are You Hurting?

We are taught in America life is supposed to be fun where your dreams come true. Watching TV, we find most everyone lives in fine homes, drive nice clean cars, have great careers, and a wonderful family. The American dream is presented by society as fact and if you’re not living it, then something is wrong with you.

The truth is the American dream is just that- a dream. Television and movies are nothing more than fantasy for the most part. Growing older, many become disillusioned with life and take no pleasure in it. Anger, frustration, discouragement, and depression may become part of life as we follow the majority to try to obtain our piece of success. We build up the heat on the pressure cooker we are it until we, like the cooker, blow our tops.

Is this what life is all about? Are we born to live miserable lives? If we made mistakes (and who has not), is it too late for us? Is there any hope left out there?

The Bible teaches we are not born to live in misery and there is hope for us. Jeremiah 29:11 proclaims, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”. Please note God wants to give each of us “a future and a hope”. Jesus tells us, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). God does not want any to be lost but all to come to repentance (1 Peter 3:9).

Do You Need a Fresh Start?

This is a subtitle for your new post

All of us sometimes wish we could start anew; get a new beginning. Is this you? Life has not

worked out the way we planned and instead has turned into a nightmare. All your dreams, ideas, hopes, and aspirations seem to have fallen apart. You are now frustrated, discouraged, and are depressed over this thing called life. Where do you go now? What do you do now?

If you are not a Christian, please consider turning your life over to God. He can make all things

new. When we believe and obey the gospel of Jesus Christ, we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). All our past sins are literally washed away (Revelation 1:5; Acts 22:16). We have a new purpose in life as we seek to please God and obey His word. We are added to the family of Christ Jesus and are members of His church (Acts 2:47).

But you say, I am already a Christian and experiencing all these problems. What am I supposed to do? Realize we will have problems and troubles in this life, but Jesus has given us the victory (John 16:33). We keep our eyes and minds focused on Jesus, so we do not grow weary or become discouraged (Hebrews 12:1-3). We realize this world is not our home and focus on the true eternal matters (Hebrews 11:13-16). Understand these heartaches and sorrows are but for the moment (2 Corinthians 4:17). Finally, our true goal is not our pleasures but doing the Father’s will (Matthew 7:21).

Friend, keep your heart and eyes centered on Jesus. Lose your life for His sake and you will find

it (Matthew 10:39). Focus on what really matters! Become single minded- doing the Lord’s will.

Everything else will fall into place as the Lord directs (Matthew 6:33; Proverbs 3:5,6).

Questions to Consider

Friends, it is vital we do not take the word of man when it comes to religious matters, but

the Word of God. We are to follow the example of the Bereans in Acts 17:11, “These were

more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all

readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so”. The

Bereans checked out what was being preached to them and made certain it matched up to

Scripture.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

1) Is one church as good as another? Matthew 16:18; Matthew 15:9; Ephesians 1:22,23.

2) As long as you are sincere and mean well, does it matter to God how we worship Him?

John 4:23,24; Matthew 15:9.

3) May I become a Christian by saying the “sinner’s prayer”? Isaiah 59:1,2; John 9:31;

Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-9; Acts 22:16; Colossians 2:12; 1 Peter 3:21. Please note there is no

“sinner’s prayer” as taught by many religious groups today found in the Bible.

4) Is the Bible truly God’s Word or is it simply a Good Book to guide us? 2 Timothy

3:16,17; John 17:17; Psalm 19:7; Hebrews 4:12.

5) Is one saved “by faith only”? James 2:24

6) Must I be baptized to be saved? Is baptism essential? Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38,22:16;

Romans 6:3-9; 1 Peter 3:21.

Folks, it matters what we believe and Whom we obey! Please read God’s Word and follow

Wednesday Night Singings

The last Wednesday of every month has been dedicated to singing nights at Naff Avenue. While we do still offer a short devotional and time for prayer, we use this as a time of learning new songs, practicing songs we are not familiar with, and (personally, my favorite!) allowing the young men to stand in front of the audience and practice leading songs. It is a great opportunity to build their confidence in this important aspect of worship. While we do allow our young men as much time as needed to lead the songs they would like, we also give our veteran song leaders and any other man the opportunity that would like to stand up and lead a song. Please make plans to join us next time we have our singing Wednesday nights as I am certain you will be encouraged!

Who Will You Follow?

There are only two paths we can really follow in this life. Jesus proclaimed in Matthew

7:13,14, “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to

destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is narrow and the way is

constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it”. Sadly, many choose the wrong path and then ponder why their lives turned out as they did.

These folks will cry out, “Woe is me. If it were not for bad luck, we would have no luck at all”.

The truth is they are often their own worst enemy. Many choose to be unfaithful and then

wonder why their marriage is falling apart. Others neglect their education or learning a skilled

trade and cannot understand why there is no good paying job. Some take up excessive drinking or smoking cigarettes and cannot comprehend why they have health issues later in life. Others choose poorly concerning who their friends are and later are involved in unforeseen circumstances.

Friends, actions bring consequences. The decisions and the path we choose in this life have a

direct impact on our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Proverbs 23:7

teaches, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he”. Our thoughts lead to choices, which leads to

words and actions, which leads to consequences.

Do you want a joyful and successful life? Consider your thoughts carefully and the actions you

take. It boils down to this: which path will you choose? God’s path which leads to life or the

world’s path which leads to death? No one can serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). Choose

Jesus and live!

Men's Devotional - Tuesday, September 20th

On Tuesday, September 20th, the men at Naff Avenue resumed our monthly Men's devotional after that a hiatus during the summer months. The devotional was brought to us by Gene Maxwell, Sr. ("Papaw"), who did a marvelous job reminding us of the importance and power of PRAYER. We also reflected on our own lives at answered prayers we are able to look back and rejoice over. His lesson was developed primarily from Luke 11:9-10. Besides the devotional, we were also treated with some of Mike Williams famous cooking. His fried chicken strips, French fries, coleslaw, and homemade sauce would rival beat any you can buy at a restaurant. And if that wasn't enough, we were treated with Oreo desserts, pies, cookies, watermelon, coffee, etc. And as good as the food and the devotional were, (in my opinion) nothing compares to the fellowship we enjoy with brethren. What an encouragement it is to see like-minded Christians outside of Sunday's and Wednesday's where we can get to know one another better, laugh together, and, most importantly, learn more about God's word together.

May God continue to bless the Naff Avenue congregation in our efforts to evangelize our community and the world!

Ladies' Devotional Night - September 13, 2022

After a 3-month break due to hectic summer schedules, the ladies resumed their monthly devotional on Tuesday, September 13 ^th . They are currently going through a series entitled, “Women of the Bible,” and this months’ lesson was on “Eve.” In addition to a devotional, the ladies also enjoyed a fellowship meal together and packed goodie baskets for area teachers to show our support and appreciation for those who care for our children. If you were unable to attend the devotional in September, make plans now to attend in October. In addition to the encouragement we receive from one another, these fellowship opportunities are great ways to invite friends and family to be a part of our earthly mission.

Heaven

It is popular in today’s world to teach there are many ways to Heaven. Examples of this

include following the doctrines of various men and women such as being a "good person"

or "just be sincere in your beliefs" (whatever they are), and the “faith only” doctrine.

The Bible (which is God's word) teaches there is only one way. Jesus said, “I am the way,

the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).

Referring to Jesus, Luke wrote, "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other

name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Jesus said

in Luke 6:46, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say"?

Where are you? Who are you listening to? Others? Yourself? Let's start listening to God! It

makes all the difference in this life and for all eternity! Take time to read the New

Testament and examine yourself. Have you done what the Bible teaches is necessary

concerning salvation? As a Christian, are you walking with Jesus? Is your name written in

the Lamb’s Book of Life?

Everything Is Changing

We hear these words often today. The economy is turbulent with rampant inflation,

interest rates are going up, and the stock market is having a rough time. What are we

going to do? Where do we turn in these challenging times?

Some things do not change. The Lord states in Malachi 3:6, “For I am the Lord, I change

not”. During these troublesome times, when panic and fear are gripping the hearts of

many, will we not turn to the Lord? History reminds us kingdoms rise and fall and

economies shoot up like a rocket and fall like a rock. Please do not set your heart and

mind on the things of this world! If you do, you will be sadly disappointed and never have

true peace. Solomon wrote, “I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and

indeed all is vanity and grasping for the wind” (Ecclesiastes 1:14).

Friends, please take your worries, fears, and heartaches to the Lord and leave them with

Him. He wants to help but will not force Himself upon you. Jesus stands at the door and

knocks (Revelation 3:20). Will you answer the door and let Him in? Listen to Jesus, “Come

to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon

you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your

souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

How will you answer Jesus? All authority has been given to Him and His words will judge

us on the last day (Matthew 28:18; John 12:48). Please turn to the Lord and live! At Naff

What Are You Working For?

There is an old expression that has a Biblical truth, “If you do not work, you do not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). But, what are we working for? The physical food we eat may nourish our bodies for 60, 70, or even 80 plus years and that’s it. Yet, the food we eat must be replenished daily because it does not last, just as our physical bodies do not last.

Jesus warns us in John 6:27, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him”. God did not place man on earth to work for food only. The word “work” as used here means to strive for it.

We need to work (strive) for the “food” that will result in our being right with God so we may have everlasting life with Him. Jesus came to this earth to be our Savior and to save us from our sins when we believe and obey His gospel.

Today, billions of people are spiritually starving to death because they do not know “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Just hearing and knowing is not enough, we must obey God’s commands. Jesus said, “blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it” (Luke 11:28)!

Friend, where are you? Are you staving to death because you do not know God’s word? If you know God’s commands, are you obeying them? If you need to, will you get right with God?

Integrity

If I could instill one thing in you, it would be integrity. Doing the right thing, standing up

when everyone else is sitting down, and being willing to die for a cause.

Today, we need that more than ever. It is not about me, not about power, and not about

fame. It is about Jesus Christ and shining like stars in the midst of a crooked and perverse

generation.

Fight evil and do good. Teach your children and your grandchildren well. Do this and you

will truly live.

I wrote these words two years ago in a Face Book post. Not much has changed in the

world. We need integrity more than ever. We need to stand up for what is right. We need to

reconnect with others and show them the way. Love, selflessness, and putting ourselves out

there are the keys.

Let us fight the good fight and not back down. Let us be an encouragement to others. Let us

boldly proclaim the word of God.

“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those

things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let

us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will

reveal even this to you” (Philippians 3:13-15).

A Message We Need to Hear

Many today wander aimlessly looking for the meaning and purpose of life. They search and search and find no answers. The result is frustration and despair. The message everyone needs to hear is God created us, loves us, and sent His Son Jesus to save us! The gospel of Jesus is the good news to a sin sick, evil world.

But how do we know what to do? How do we learn about God? Who or what is the truth in these matters of vital importance? The Bible is our answer! The Bible is the literal words of God penned by men as they were guided by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:20,21). The Bible is to be our sole authority in religious matters.

Jesus said, “It is written, man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Peter writes, “But the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached to you” (1 Peter 1:25). The apostle John writes, “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him” (2 John 9,10).

Most Americans profess faith in God, Jesus, and the Bible, but deviate from the Bible as sole authority and add the doctrines and commandments of men. We are not to add to or take away from the Word (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18,19). Let us stand firm in our resolve to be faithful to God’s word. May our lights shine bright as we speak the truth in love!

Have You Considered Paul?

The idea for this week’s article comes from a suggestion made by one of our members

concerning Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter 11. All of us have suffered setbacks, heartaches, and

challenges. The problem is sometimes we feel sorry for ourselves and proclaim, “Woe is me”.

“No one has it as hard as me”. “Everyone else has it easy compared to what I have been or am

now going through.”

As our brother suggested, let us consider Paul and the difficulties he endured. First, false

teachers were at the Corinth congregation, and they were stirring up trouble. They accused Paul of not being a true apostle, of being weak, and saying he was coming for a third visit, but was still a no show. Please read 2 Corinthians 1:12-23, 2:1-17; 11:1-21. Can you imagine how this

must have grieved Paul? What about us? Does it not hurt us when people speak ill of us and

make false accusations? Yet, Paul stayed the course! He corrected, he rebuked, he exhorted,

and he loved them despite what they were doing!

Second, Paul endured physical pain through beatings, being stoned, being shipwrecked, going

without food and water, and being imprisoned (2 Corinthians 11:24-27). How many of us have

undergone anything like that? Third, Paul loved all Christians and congregations of the Lord’s

church. The pressure he felt on himself for this concern was enormous (2 Corinthians 11:28).

How many of us are concerned about other New Testament congregations? Are we praying for them? Are we reaching out to help or lending a sympathetic ear to listen?

Friends, I am not making light of anyone’s problems or struggles. Please understand we are not alone. Everyone has problems. Let us consider Paul when we feel sorry for ourselves and think no one has it as bad as me. Let us rise when knocked down and stay the course of our faith. We are here for you, and we care. Vacation Bible School - 2022

On Saturday, July 16th, we held our first Vacation Bible School (VBS) at our new building. This was a special occasion for a few reasons, but namely, it was our first VBS in our new building, and it was our first VBS as the Naff Avenue Church of Christ. By all standards, this VBS surpassed everyone's expectations. Attendance was great (we were at max capacity in all classrooms), the fellowship was great, and the ladies did a wonderful job decorating and planning for the event. Also, despite the extreme heat and having a few outdoor activities for kids, we were cooled off by tents, fans, and a Kona snow cone truck (thanks, Kona!!!). Everyone in attendance seemed to have a great time and was encouraged by being there. There are rumors that Naomi and Ruth even made an appearance! We are greatly looking forward to next year's VBS and hope you will make plans to attend!

OPPORTUNITYISNOWHERE

One of our greatest assets as a Christian is the right outlook on life. Everyone of us has a

choice: to seek the mindset of Jesus or to seek the mindset of this world. If we focus on

the positive, we enjoy wonderful benefits as listed in Philippians 4:6-9. If we focus on the

negative, we reap fear, anxiety, dread, and misery.

The choice is truly up to us. Yes, I know we will face hardships. Friends, that is life! Life is a

series of ups and downs, and sideway motions. Jesus told us in this world, “we will have

tribulation, but to be of good cheer for He has overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus

tells us that he who overcomes will inherit eternal life. The words “he who overcomes”

are found seven times in Revelation chapters 2 and 3! This is not by accident! Seven is a

number of perfection and completion in the Bible.

Let us make sure we overcome the things of this world and stay true to the course. We

cannot do it by ourselves, we need Jesus every step of the way. We need the sword of the

Spirit and we need our brothers and sisters in Christ.

What do you see when you look at the heading for our article? Most see opportunity is

nowhere. Let us see opportunity is now here! Stay the course, fight the war, and Jesus will

see you through!

Everything In It's Place

There is a proper place for everything and everyone. The boat is fine in the water, but water is not fine in the boat. The church is to be in the world, but the world is not to be in the church. That is the problem in so many congregations today.

To attract more visitors and keep young people, many are departing from the New Testament pattern to pursue worldly matters. Instrumental instruments are brought in, praise teams installed, women serving in leadership roles in worship, and preaching watered down so as not to offend anyone.

What are we to do? Stand on the firm foundation of God’s word and be the congregation the New Testament commands and demands us to be! Resist “change agents”, preach the whole counsel of God, show love to all, and stand up to sin. Let us rejoice in the simplicity of being a New Testament Christian! May we never give in to pressures to be “politically correct” or to conform to what the world demands! The truth of God’s word is the truth regardless of what our government declares or Hollywood proclaims!

2 Timothy 2:19 teaches, “Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His;” and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to keep away from wickedness.”

Teach Our Children Well

Countless congregations of the Lord’s church have few, if any, children or young adults.

Where have all the children and young adults gone? When of age, they have moved away

to prestigious jobs, moved away to start a new life, or moved away for something different.

Sadly, when many move away for better opportunities or for more adventure, they also

move away from the church. Approximately 70% of our young people leave the New

Testament church by age 22 and many never come back.

There are no simple answers to the problem. Young people see legalism, harshness, lack of

support for the young, hypocrisy, and failure to listen in many congregations. As a result,

they vow to find something different from their “parent’s religion”.

Here are some solutions: Listen to our children and their complaints. If we are at fault,

admit our shortcomings and change our ways. Demonstrate our faith in action by loving

God, loving our members, and loving those on the outside. Include our young folks in

activities and allow them to work and serve in their local congregation. Teach our children

from an early age the Holy Scriptures. Encourage them through the trials and tribulations of

growing up. Trust them to do right based upon what we have taught them about God and

life. Love our children when they do right and love them when they mess up. Pray from

day 1 and forward for them and all aspects of their lives.

“And that from childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you

wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15).

A Call To Action

Religious groups across America are losing members and closing doors. Sadly, the Lord’s church is experiencing similar shrinkage. Approximately ten New Testament congregations close their doors each month. Fourteen congregations have ceased to exist in north-east Louisiana since 1990. The Rayville congregation closed its doors in December. I can think of at least six congregations in our area that are in serious trouble.

The Christian Chronicle reports since 1990, we have lost over 1260 congregations and one fourth of that number has occurred in the last 3 years. Where are we headed and what do we do?

First, realize America is not the same. We now live in a post Christian era where the Bible and prayer are banned from many schools. Over 61 million babies have been murdered since 1973 and the LBGQT+ movement grows in its ungodliness. Please pray for our country and our leaders that we will repent and come back to God. Vote for those who best exemplify (as possible) Godly principles.

Second, many have grown complacent. We are inward focused in our congregations (it is all about us and our happiness) rather than being outward focused. Remember Matthew 28:18-20!

Third, we need to build relationships as we go out and search for those who are lost, those who are in need, and those who are out of service. Door knocking and in home Bible studies are the key.

If ever there was a time for action, it is now! Dear friend, stand up and get involved in this tremendous war that is raging in America today! Let us invite others to services, encourage all, and exemplify Christ in our lives daily.

“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain” (Philippians 2:14-16 NKJV).

Lions, Tigers, and Bears. Oh, My!

The phrase “Lions, tigers, and bears. Oh, my!” comes from the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz”. The phrase was part of a song sung by Dorothy and her traveling partners to express their fear while going through a creepy forest. Today the phrase is used to express awe, apprehension, or fear regarding the presence, combination, or abundance of three things. One could easily say “lions, tigers, and bears, oh my” regarding inflation, recession, and violence (especially in America).

Fear is taking root in the lives of so many today. What about the Christian? What are we to do amongst this sea of chaos and worry? Remember 2 Timothy 1:7- “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”. The things of this world are not to rule over us. We stand for what is right according to the word of God and we put our trust in Him. Jesus taught, “But I will show you whom you should fear. Fear him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!” (Luke 12:5).

Now is the time for Christians to let their lights shine! Now is the time to set the example by praying for our nation to repent, praying for God’s will to be done, and praying for our leaders to recognize there is a God and they are not Him. Let us resolve to stand firm in the Lord Who is the anchor of our souls.

Dear friends, who are you standing for? The World? The crowd? Let us encourage one another to stand for the Lord no matter what! Revelation 2:10 teaches, “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life”.

A Time For Modesty

The Kardashians, Entertainment Tonight, and Hollywood all promote wearing as little as possible and showing off what you have. The immorality and decadence of these and other groups are mind boggling. You are laughed off the stage if you discuss modesty, the Bible, or standing up for what God says is right and wrong.

Dear friends, in this crooked and perverse world of sin stand up for God and shine as a light. Never be ashamed of being against the gay movement. Never flinch as you declare abortion is wrong and is tantamount to murder. Dress modestly, keep your speech godly, and do what is right according to God’s word. Do not be afraid of offending someone. We are to speak the truth in love, but we are to speak the truth. Many do not want to hear the truth. The first words out of their mouths are, “Who are you to judge me? Jesus said, “Do not judge”.

In Matthew 7:1-5, Jesus is teaching about hypocritical judging. Jesus teaches we are to “judge with righteous judgement” (John 7:24). This means we are to judge according to God’s word. John instructs us to “test the spirits whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Do not let anyone guilt trip you in feeling bad about declaring God’s word. The bottom line is deep down they know they are in sin and refuse to deal with it.

“Do all things without complaining and disputing that you may become harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain” (Philippians 2:14-16).

A Mind to Work

Dear friends, I am so pleased and grateful for you here at Naff Avenue. The love you have for one another and love for our visitors and your willingness to work never ceases to amaze me. The fellowship meals, the help when someone comes forward for baptism, and the outpouring of love to make certain our Men’s Retreat and gospel meeting were such a success are all demonstrations of your mind to work.

I think of the men working on the young people’s outside play and eating area. All the plans, preparations, and hard physical work that are necessary for this dream to become a reality. I simply say: Thank You! We are already exploring expanding our parking area as we continue to grow in physical number as well as spiritually. The dedication and willingness to work as we host our first ever VBS here at Naff Avenue on July 16th is further testimony of your dedication. The Monthly Men’s and Lady’s Bible studies again reflects on your love for God, His word, and each other.

Your thirst for God’s word is amazing as you continue in your correspondence courses and group studies. The Sunday afternoon meals you have together as you grow closer with one another and the Lord warms my heart. So far this year, we have had 7 baptisms, 5 have placed membership, 2 requested prayer, and 1 restoration. Let us continue to seek out the lost and to help restore the erring.

Nehemiah so well sums up my feelings for you. “So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work” (Nehemiah 4:6). May we always have this attitude of love for God, love for one another, and a love to work for the Lord and His kingdom.

In the South, we are known for our great food. From crawfish to jambalaya, to seafood gumbo, we know how to cook and eat. Eating is a great form of entertainment and cooks scramble to find the latest and best recipes. Here is a great recipe for a growing church:

First, we need to evangelize by looking for opportunities to tell others about New Testament Christianity (Matthew 28:18-20). All may not be teachers, but we can invite others to our services and events. Remember, eighty-eight per cent of visitors come to an assembly because someone cared enough to invite them.

Second, we must be hospitable to our visitors and our members. We greet our visitors and help them to feel at home. We answer any questions they may have and show them where the age-appropriate Bible classes are. We encourage them to visit again and invite them to lunch. Our visitors need to know we appreciate them, and we are here to help.

Third, we must obey the Lord’s command, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34,35). Christians love each other by serving one another. From bringing meals in sick-ness and in sorrow, to flowers or presents for new arrivals, we are there for one another. Love is looking for ways to serve and putting others ahead of ourselves.

Friends, let us evangelize and invite, let us demonstrate hospitality, and let us always love one another in good times and in bad times. The world is watching. Let us show Jesus to them.

“For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel” (Ezra 7:10, NKJV). We learn three very important lessons from Ezra about how to live for God.

First, we must seek God. We must be willing to draw near to God and learn the truth about Him. We must put aside our preconceived ideas about religion and to come to God on His terms. We do this by reading and studying His Word (2 Timothy 2:15). Many are unwilling to do this and wonder where God is.

Second, we must do the commandments of God. Knowledge of God’s word is vital, but if we do not obey it, it does us no good. It is like knowing I need heart surgery to live but refusing to have the surgery performed. Many today know what to do: how to become a Christian, how to worship God, and how to stay faithful, but they refuse to do it.

Third, we must teach the truth. We must not be false teachers of the gospel or of the New Testament. Those who preach and teach God’s word must do so in accordance with the Holy Scriptures. False teachers are an abomination to God (Galatians 1:6-10).

Jesus put it this way in Matthew 28:19&20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen”. “Go” means to seek, “teaching” means to teach, and “observe all things I have commanded” you means to do.

Growing

We have been so very blessed this year in Christ Jesus! We’ve had 6 baptisms since late January and three placed membership with us. One also responded for the prayers of the church. We rejoice and pray for all of these, but like brother Marshall Keeble, we are praying for “just one more, Lord”.

We are climbing up out of the pandemic pit and are so excited about our work here at Naff Avenue. We are looking for more to be baptized into Christ, more to place membership with us, and more to be restored. Please remember the principle from 1 Corinthians 3:6- “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase”.

A congregation’s growth is not the result of one, two, or even ten people. It is all of us doing our part to work in and for the kingdom of the Lord. We are not focused on ourselves or our personal desires, but what is best for Naff Avenue congregation in accordance with the Holy Scriptures. Let us never forget that and always strive to assemble and work together in a spirit of unity, joy, and love.

Let us be encouraging, loving, and helping to our new members and those who recently put on Jesus in baptism. I love what 1 Thessalonians 3:12 teaches, “And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you”.

Friends, let love for the Lord and our fellow man define us as we “study to show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).

A Time of Refreshing

Spring is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. After a long winter’s nap, everything starts coming back to life. The trees start sprouting new leaves, the grass becomes green once more, birds are twittering, the purple martins return, and farm animal babies are all around. It is a glorious time of renewal and hope. Spring is truly in the air.

What about us as Christians? Do we need a time of renewal? Do we need a time of refreshing? I believe we all do. The walk of a Christian is not a straight line or a steady path going upward. Instead, our walk is one full of zigs and zags, hills, and deep valleys. Sometimes, we are on the mountain top of joy and at other times, in the deep, dark valley of despair.

The Bible talks about how as Christians, we can refresh one another. We encourage one another to grow in the Lord, to not give up, and to start new works. Let us please consider passages such as Romans 15:32, 1 Corinthians 16:18, 2 Corinthians 7:13, 2 Timothy 1:16, Philemon 1:7, and 1:20. “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). We have an influence on others, let us use that to refresh and encourage our fellow soldiers of the cross.

For those who are not Christians, God’s word can lead to times of great refreshing if they will believe and obey the Lord’s commands. “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19). The happiest day of one’s life is when he or she realizes they are lost and does something about it by being baptized for the remission of their sins (Acts 2:38). Coming out of that watery grave, one is tremendously relieved because that individual has passed from death into life again in Christ Jesus. Please read John 5:24 and Romans 6:3-9.

This spring, let us be refreshed in the Lord and be refreshed by our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Our Men’s Retreat was a huge success with at least 11 congregations (including ours) in attendance. The singing, teaching, food, and fellowship were awesome! Our gospel meeting with Cory Waddell was a huge success. Great preaching, fellowship, singing, and food were enjoyed by all. Congregations from all over our area were in attendance. We broke our Sunday AM and PM attendance records during the meeting.

Where do we go from here? How do we build on the success of these two wonderful events? Can we keep the momentum and enthusiasm going? What do we do?

Please understand our congregation is growing. We have enjoyed four baptisms in the last six weeks. We have numerous visitors at our worship services. Members are faithful in attendance. I personally feel we are just getting started.

Bible studies are being conducted by members of our congregation. Visitation is increasing reaching out to strangers in the community as well as those who are out of service. Prayers are being lifted up for the elders, deacons, song leaders, Bible class teachers, and members. Bibles are being studied more every day.

Our Bible correspondence courses are being given out every week as well as our books we offer for free. Visitors are being made to feel welcome and encouraged to come and grow with us. Our deacons- Steve Barnhill, Jake Maxwell, Brannon Smith, and Mike Williams- are four of the most sincere and hardest working deacons I have ever had the privilege to know.

Where do we go from here? Let us keep up the good works we are doing as noted above. Let us keep the prayers going forth and our Bibles being studied. Let us keep the outreach to the community moving forward. Let us dream big and work hard to achieve these goals for the Lord and His kingdom.

“For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

Gospel Meeting with Cory Waddell

We are grieved to see the conclusion of our 2022 Gospel Meeting with special guest Cory Waddell of the Bear Valley Church of Christ in Denver, CO. This years’ topic was “Faith Through the Ages” and focused on the idea that faith has always been required of mankind, and how mankind has always been saved in the same manner: by Grace, through Faith. Cory used the acronym F·A·I·T·H to show how true, living faith requires Facts, Action, it’s Individualized, Trust, and Hope. He looked at the Patriarchal, Mosaical, and Christian eras to show where these components were always involved in the salvation of man’s soul. Cory’s unique ability to engage your interest and present the truth’s found in God’s word can’t help but invigorate the audience. More about Cory: Cory Waddell began work with Bear Valley in January of 2020, having previously served churches in The Woodlands, TX and Lebanon, TN. Cory is married to Paige and has two active boys. He discovered his desire to enter ministry at the young age of 12-years-old, which ultimately led him to attend Freed-Hardeman University. While there he earned a B.A. in Biblical Studies and a M.A. in New Testament. As of 2019, Cory is also pursuing a Master of Divinity from Heritage Christian University. In his spare time, Cory enjoys hiking and practicing martial arts with his boys.

Men’s Retreat 2022

Friday, March 18th kicked off the third annual Naff Avenue church of Christ Men’s Retreat at Chemin-A-Haut park in Bastrop, Louisiana. This year’s retreat brought men from 11 congregations of the Lord’s church together for the purpose of edifying and encouraging one another and glorifying our Lord and Savior. If you missed the retreat, you missed great food and fun, but most of all you missed great singing, lessons from God’s word, and fellowship with brothers in Christ. The topic of the Men’s Retreat was “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” Lessons were brought by Jerry Martin (Crossett church of Christ - Crossett, AR), Ken Stegall (Jackson Street church of Christ – Monroe, LA), Don Delukie (Sterlington church of Christ – Sterlington, LA), Cory Waddell (Bear Valley church of Christ – Denver, CO), and Travis Arrant (Naff Avenue church of Christ – Bastrop, LA). If you missed the retreat, please make plans to attend next year as each year our retreat has increased in number of attendees, and, not coincidentally, the number of congregations in attendance. I have attached a few pictures and a bit of audio from a portion of the singing. I can assure you that the audio file attached does not do justice for the quality of singing that took place those 2 days. Everyone in attendance was edified and encouraged having been there, and we are already looking forward to next year’s Men’s Retreat!

Our Gospel Meeting

Our gospel meeting is here! We are so glad to have brother Cory Waddell with us this week. We welcome Cory and his family to our community. As members of the Naff Avenue congregation, what do we need to be doing to support our meeting?

First, we need to be praying every day. We need to pray Cory preaches the best sermons of his life. Please pray Cory will recall what he has prepared to speak and that he will speak boldly as the Lord desires and passionately with fervor and vigor. Christians, please pray all in the audience will listen with attentive and good hearts. We need to pray souls will be saved and folks we know who have fallen away, will be restored. “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16b).

Second, we need to support this meeting with our attendance. I have attended meetings where visitors outnumber members in attendance. We dearly love those visiting, but where are the members? Let us fill this building to where we must bring chairs in to accommodate the audience as we hear the Lord’s word proclaimed. “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24,25).

Third, we need to be planting seeds. We need to be calling, visiting, and inviting our friends, neighbors, coworkers, school friends to our meeting. Eighty percent cent of the time a visitor attends a congregation is because someone cared enough to invite him or her. Let us be sure and reach out to our former members who are out of service as well.

This meeting can be awesome and a blessing to all, but a lot depends on you and me. Are we willing to commit to these simple steps?

No Fear

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timo-thy 1:7). In these troublesome times, this verse is a breath of fresh air. Notice God does not want us to be fearful, timid, or anxious. Instead, God desires to give us three wonderful things.

First, God wants to give us a spirit of power. This is not for us to be egotistical or boastful, but to know our power, our strength comes from God. He gives us the ability to withstand the stress, discomfort, and grief of this world. Paul stated this so well in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

Second, God wants to give us the spirit of love. 1 John 4:19 tells us, “We love Him because He first loved us”. God demonstrated His love for us by sending Jesus to this earth (John 3:16). Jesus expressed His love for us by going to the cross. For these reasons and many more, we love God and want to please Him. We love our fellow man and desire to serve and help others. Love is so desperately needed in the world today.

Third, God wants to give us a sound mind. A mind that is logical and correct in thought, word, and deed. “Sound means the proper, appropriate, whole, right, and correct way of thinking. To have a sound mind, means to have the proper dissemination of information which results in a right perspective” (kingdomboiz.com). God’s word gives us the ability to have a correct way of thinking in our relationships with God and man (Philippians 4:8,9; 2 Timothy 3:16,17).

Friends, please do not let the things of this world weigh you down. Instead, let us keep our hearts and minds centered on Jesus and doing His will (Hebrews 12:1-3; John 15:14). God is in control despite President Putin’s desire to take over the Ukraine. God is in control despite the economic turmoil in America. God is in control despite whatever circumstances we are facing (1 Corinthians 10:13). Simply put, God is in control. Where are you putting your trust?

Our Plea

The church of Christ is under attack by many today. We are accused of being mean spirited toward women, a cult, legalistic to the point of being pharisaical, and homophobic. If someone asked you, “What is the church of Christ all about”, how would you answer?

Here is what I hope your answer would be- “We are all about Jesus Christ and doing it His way”. Jesus brought a new covenant in effect after He died on that cross, was placed in a tomb, and arose the third day (Matthew 26:28; 2 Corinthians 3:6; Colossians 2:14; Hebrews 8:7-13). Jesus is the founder and builder of the church which belongs to Him (Matthew 16:18; Acts 2:47; Acts 20:28; Ephesians 1:22,23).

Our plea to all is simple- “We desire to be New Testament Christians”. What does that mean? The New Testament is our sole (and yes, soul) authority in all religious matters. The way one becomes a Christian is outlined by the New Testament. The way worship is conducted in the assemblies is proclaimed by the New Testament. The way we live our lives and our interactions with others is to be in accordance with the New Testament. The way for us to be pleasing to God is documented in the New Testament.

The confusion of the religious world is staggering. According to brother Rod Rutherford in his book, Denominational Doctrines, there are approximately 2,000 various groups all claiming to be “Christian” in America today. One group’s teachings totally contradict that of another. 1 Corinthians 14:33 teaches, “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints”. “The churches of the saints” are all the congregations of the Lord’s church around the world (compare Romans 16:16).

Friends, it matters what you believe. It matters how you worship. It matters if you are scripturally baptized. It matters how you live your life. Please consider these passages: Matthew 7:21; John 12:48; Acts 2:38; Romans 16:17,18; and Galatians 1:6-10.

What about you? Where do you stand? What is your plea?

Enthusiasm for the Lord

Approximately 60% of congregations of the Lord’s church in America do not have elders. Since 1988, thirteen congregations in northeast Louisiana have ceased to exist. Many congregations are hanging on by a thread. According to the Christian Chronicle, approximately 10 church of Christ congregations have closed their doors each month since 2016.

Why are these things happening? I believe a large part of the problem is we have lost our enthusiasm for the Lord. Enthusiasm means to have zeal, zest, and zing. We need to love our Lord and our fellow man with all our hearts (Matthew 22:37-39). We need to be outward focused rather than inward focused (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15). We need to support our elders and deacons (1 Timothy 5:17). For congregations who do not have elders, we need to be working to have qualified men (Acts 14:23; Titus 1:5). We need to give of ourselves and our financial means cheerfully and liberally (2 Corinthians 9:16; Ephesians 2:10). We need to worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

We are fortunate here at Naff Avenue as I see enthusiasm for the Lord and our doing the needful things necessary to stay healthy as a congregation. What can we do to improve? We need more Bible class teachers (see Jake Maxwell). We need more men preparing to serve in leadership roles. We need to be inviting others to our services. We need to be looking for opportunities to have in-home Bible studies. We need to devote ourselves to study (Bible) and prayer.

Friends, how is your enthusiasm for the Lord? What motivates you? What are your top three priorities in your life? Jesus said so well, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

What Does God Desire for You?

Dear friends, how would you answer this question? Does God desire for you to be healthy? Does God desire for you to have your dreams come true? Does God desire for you to have a life of ease and material goods? Does God desire for you to be well thought of?

What does God desire for you? God desires for you and everyone else to be saved! Jesus taught in Matthew 9:12b,13, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick, but go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” God loves you and wants you to be His for all eternity.

There is a great day coming and we need to be prepared (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). We need the blood of Jesus to wash away our sins (Revelation 1:5; Acts 2:38). That precious blood we encounter when we are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:16; Galatians 3:27).

Friends, God desires us to be saved and stay saved (1 Corinthians 15:1-3; Revelation 2:10). Where are you today? Have you been baptized in accordance with the commandments of the New Testament? Are you staying faithful to the Lord?

Parents, are you talking to your children about this? The age of accountability (approximately age 12) is very important in our young person’s life. We need to emphasize and encourage our young people to become Christians by obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ. Today is the day of salvation for we know not what tomorrow holds.

“Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead” (Acts 17:30,31).

Words Are Not Enough

Dear friends, as I write these words, I am now in my fourth day of having a very nasty bout of COVID. I cannot wait until I am well and can return to doing the things I love to do such as teaching, preaching, and visiting. Karen and I thank you for your prayers, food supplied, and well wishes. We love you all.

Brother F.M. Mattox, in his book “The Eternal Kingdom” makes a wonderful point about Christianity. He states, “The teaching of Christ is important, but the heart of the Christian religion is not in what Christ said. It is in what Christ did”.

Please stop and think about this. Jesus taught wonderful, marvelous lessons about love, mercy, and grace. He foretold of eternal punishment for those who refused to believe in Him and His words. He prepared His disciples concerning His upcoming death and how He would arise from the dead on the third day.

Jesus did more than just talk. He backed everything up by His actions. He proved He had the power to forgive sins by telling the paralyzed man to rise and walk (Matthew 9:6). His miracles of healing the sick, raising the dead, and casting out demons proved He was the long-awaited Messiah (John 10:25,38). He arose from the grave on the third day and appeared to His disciples on numerous occasions and to many others before ascending to heaven 40 days later (John 20:19,20;1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Acts 1).

Friends, Jesus revolutionized the world by His words and His deeds. He came to be our Savior and to show us how to truly live. Today, many want to cheapen this. We are told “Just believe in Jesus and invite Him in your heart”. “Once you are saved, you are always saved”. “Believe in Jesus and live as you want”.

Jesus said, “The words I have spoken will judge him in the last day” (John 12:48). “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). “Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

Do you see the difference? Being a Christian is more than just words, it is a lifestyle. Do not be deceived: believe and obey for there is no other way!

The Raging Pandemic

Since its detection in late 2019, the Coronavirus has resulted worldwide in 5,579,670 deaths and 337,837,110 cases of infection as of January 19, 2022, at 3:20 PM. The monetary cost exceeds 11 trillion dollars. These numbers do not include the tremendous amount of discomfort, anxiety, and grief this virus has afflicted upon hundreds of millions more.

Here in Louisiana, we are in the grips of a massive omicron variant of COVID that is shuttering schools, pushing hospitals to the brink, and causing disruptions in the workforce. Many congregations are curtailing services due to large numbers of their members being ill. At Naff Avenue, we are continuing, but members are being careful to quarantine if they have been exposed to the virus. At present, I am not conducting in-home visitation unless I am invited to do so by the member or homeowner.

Hopefully, this surge will soon subside, and we can resume our more normal activities. I ask you to please pray for: all on our sick list, for our first responders and health care workers, and for the Lord to put this pandemic behind us. Let us pray for our government leaders on the national, state, and local level to make Godly decisions in accordance with the Holy Scriptures. I ask we pray for our nation to repent and to return to God. Let us pray for our young, the school staff and administration, and for the elderly. Let us pray for God to direct our lives and give us the wisdom we need to be a light to this sinful and perverse generation.

Let us never discount the power and importance of prayer. James 5:16 teaches, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much”. Let us stand firm in the Word and prayer as we live during these tumultuous times.

Losing to Win?

The idea of losing to win sounds like really bad advice does it not? In America, we are trained at an early age to go for the gusto. Winning, as someone once said, is everything. We are told nobody remembers losers or those who came in second place. “Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” and “climb that corporate ladder” are two of the many mantras we hear proclaimed across our land. I believe behind most of this philosophy is pride and ego.

Jesus taught something different; something radically different for His disciples and those desiring to follow in His footsteps. “When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:34,35 NKJV emphasis mine).

First, notice Jesus called the people and His disciples together when He gave this teaching. Second, Jesus is telling us there is a great cost in following Him. Third, we must lose to win. We must die to this world and its’ temptations. We must die to our pride and ego. We must put God and His will first in our lives. We must choose God over our careers, our lives, our hobbies, and even our families. We must lose ourselves in serving God.

The Christians of the first century did just that. They sometimes lost their jobs, homes, families, and their lives for simply being a Christian and refusing to deny Jesus. No one knew who might be next when the persecutions came. How were these early Christians able to do this? They were grounded in their faith and were certain where their future home would be.

Paul put it this way, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13,14 NKJV). May we go and do likewise.

Friends, let us lose ourselves in Christ, so we may truly win in this life and the one to come.

Remember your ABCs

Do you remember learning your ABCs as a child? I sure do. Today, it seems children are learning them earlier than ever. I am amazed at the knowledge of a youngster before he or she even starts kindergarten.

In the business world of sales, ABCs have a different meaning. It is an acronym for “Always Be Closing”. In other words, work daily towards making the sale. Be sure to close your sale presentation with a terrific motivator so the potential customer will “buy” whatever it is you are selling.

What about us as Christians? Do the ABCs apply to us? Yes, they do! I recommend this acronym for our slogan- “Always Be Christlike”.

Think about the impact this would have on ourselves, our family, our friends, our coworkers, and our school chums. Our lives would be revolutionized. We would be a light to those around us. People would take note of our words and actions. Folks would desire what we have- Christ Jesus.

What about the church? The congregations of the Lord’s church would grow. People would comment on the love found in the assemblies. The love for the Lord, the love for the truth, the love for each other, the love for the lost, and the love for good works would be evident to all. Life would be amazing even in this sin filled, violent, pandemic riddled world in which we live.

Want to make a difference? Let Christ fill your life as you make 2022 the year you will strive to “Always Be Christlike”. Philippines 2:5 teaches, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”.

Where to Now?

Well, the holidays are over, and a new year is here. Where do we go to now? I remember when I was young and in grade school, January and February seemed like the bleakest months to me. It was dark when I fed the livestock before school and dark again shortly after arriving home. There were no school holidays back then in those two months and Easter break seemed an eternity away.

Now, I do not mind these months at all. January offers a fresh start to work on things that I need to address whether on a professional or personal level. As I age, I see God’s involvement in everything. I know God is in charge and this brings comfort and security to me despite the world’s rumblings of strife, tension, and unrest. I know Jesus is by my side no matter what. I worry less and simply let God be the God of my life. I am far from perfect but try every day to grow in the Lord and ask His and others forgiveness for my mistakes.

Dear friends, now is the best time ever to commit to commit yourself to God. If you have not put on Jesus by believing and obeying His gospel, please do so today. If you have secret sins in your life and are unsure of your salvation, please make the necessary corrections today. If you are hurting, in despair, or at the end of your rope, please let us know here at the Naff Avenue congregation. We will pray for you and do our best to assist you with the challenges you face.

Christians help one another and care for the lost and those in need. We desire to reflect the mercy and compassion of Jesus to our fellow man. I love this congregation and all our brothers and sisters around the world who love and obey our precious Savior.

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him” (Lamentations 3:22-24 NKJV).

Christmas Time

Well dear friends, it is that time of year again: Christmas. After a year of unprecedented natural disasters, wildfires, and a still ongoing pandemic, here we are.

Christmas is when the world celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is almost certain Jesus was not born on December 25th. Many have theorized the date was selected to “Christianize a pagan sun god celebration” occurring on that date”. The truth is we do not know on what day Jesus was born or even what time of year. Many Bible scholars believe He was born in the Spring because shepherds were out in the fields with their flock (Luke 2:8). Still others claim the Fall.

What matters is Jesus was born. He came to be the Savior of the world and to give us hope and assurance. “Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10,11).

As Christians, we are thankful every day Jesus was born. What is even more important is that He went to the cross, died on that cross, and arose the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 12-22). Jesus did this for you and me so He could be our Savior.

We all have fond memories of Christmas as a time of family, love, and laughter. Christmas is a time when the world stops and reflects on Jesus Christ. The world, for a brief time, is filled with hope. Hope is something the world so desperately needs.

As we celebrate Christmas, let us recall the love of God and how He truly gave the best gift of all: His only begotten Son (John 3:16,17). Let us count our blessing and “name them one by one”.

May God bless each one of you this Christmas season!

Our Peace

We live in confusing, complicated, and chaotic times. Many are to the point of confusion and do not know what to believe concerning our government, the economy, the coronavirus, or religion. Therefore uncertainty, anxiety, anger, and depression often follow as a result.

Mental health issues have skyrocketed since March of 2020. Proverbs 12:25 teaches, “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad”. How do we deal with all the negativity bombarding us through television, social media, newspapers, books, and magazines?

We limit what we watch on TV, DVDS, and social media. We are careful to what we listen to on the radio and on CDs. We concentrate upon the truth, which is God’s Word (John 17:17). We replace uncertainty with the assurance God is in complete control (Genesis 1:1; Psalms 2). As Christians, we understand God has our back (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5). We know God will not put on us more than we can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). We have the avenue of prayer to almighty God through Jesus Christ (Colossians 3:17).

When we remind ourselves of all these blessed promises and tools to help us on our Christian walk, we are no longer confused or afraid. We have peace knowing the blood of Jesus has taken care of our sins (Revelation 1:5). We know by being faithful unto death or Jesus’s second coming, Heaven will be our eternal abode (Revelation 2:10). We rest in the precious promises of God’s word (Isaiah 41:10).

The words to the old hymn are so true: “What have I to dread, what have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms” (Leaning on The Everlasting Arms, Elisha A. Hoffman, 1887). Let us remember it is only in the Lord that we will know true peace and joy (John 16:33).

The Lord's Church

The church of Jesus Christ is a marvelous kingdom. It was foretold to come in the Old Testament and came into being in the first century in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost as noted in Acts 2. Jesus said He would build His church, and nothing could or would destroy it. The Roman Empire tried and failed. The Jews, who refused to believe in Jesus, tried and failed. Satan has tried and continues to try, but has failed and will continue to fail. Man has tried his best to pollute the church and its message of the gospel and has failed. New Testament Christianity remains!

Jesus cannot and will not ever be defeated (Mathew 16:18; Matthew 28:18-20;1 Corinthians 15:23-25). The book of Revelation is a marvelous testimony to the power of Jesus and what awaits those who stay faithful until death or until the Lord’s return.

We all know the church is not a place but a people. The Greek word for church is εκκλησία which translated into English is “ecclesia” which means “a called-out assembly”. As Christians, we are called out by the gospel to live for Jesus and not live for the things of this world. The world will view us as a “peculiar people” and so we should be.

Friends, let us as Christians, exemplify Christ every day in our thoughts, words, and deeds. When we assemble, let us worship God in spirit and truth. Let us be there for one another in the good and not so good times. Let us put others ahead of ourselves. Let us welcome the rich and poor, young and old, and stranger and friend with open arms. Let us demonstrate the love of God to all and take none for granted. Let us have patience with one another and be willing accept people where they are on their spiritual walk. In all instances, teaching the truth in love.

Friends, we are part of the greatest kingdom ever. Let us express our gratitude to God for this and show our love to God and our fellow man by remaining faithful and staying on the firing line.

Kindness

The word for today is kindness.

Kindness is found 44 times in the NKJV of the Bible. It is one of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

The Bible teaches, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do" (Colossians 3:12, 13).

What does kindness mean to you? I prefer this definition: "goodness of heart".

What would happen today if we showed kindness (i.e. goodness of heart) to everyone we meet?

We would make the world a better place. We would leave others with a smile on their face. We would help lift burdens off the shoulders of others. We would make a difference in this world!

Kindness, when coupled with love and faith, will make all the difference.

Today dear friends, let us determine to show kindness and the love of Jesus to all we meet. May kindness and love be sprinkled in our thoughts, words, and deeds. God bless you as you shine for Jesus today.

Whose House Are We Building?

Today, let us consider what Benjamin Franklin said so long ago, "I've lived sir a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: That God governs in the affairs of men. If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We've been assured in the Sacred Writings that unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it".

Our nation’s leaders need to remember this! We promote and legalize the murder of the unborn, flaunt the LBGQT movement, and encourage people not to work, but to depend on the government for their means to live.

God has been removed from school, prayer banned, and evolution and atheism are taught as fact. Those who stand against these atrocities are labeled as religious fanatics, kooks, and right-wing extremists.

Let us be Daniels in this perverse and crooked generation. Daniel 2:20, 21, teaches: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding" (NKJV).

Remember dear friends, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance" (Psalm 33:12). As Christians, let us never stop standing for the truth. Let us pray for our leaders, let us pray for our enemies, let us pray for those who hate us, and let us pray to shine as lights in a dark and evil land.

A Fresh Start

Do you or have ever wished you could start over? Life has not worked out the way you planned, and you are disillusioned where you are. All your dreams, ideas, and goals seemed to have vanished into thin air. You are frustrated, discouraged, and maybe even depressed by this thing called life.

This past year and a half have literally turned the world upside down. Covid has robbed over 700,000 Americans of their lives. Many survivors are still struggling with the aftereffects of the virus such as tiredness, loss of sense of smell or taste, and chronic breathing issues. Inflation is roaring and there are serious supply chain issues. Hurricane Ida devastated southeastern Louisiana.

Can we start over? Can we have a second chance? We cannot go back and change the past, but we can change the future. Each day offers us a new beginning. Let us stop and assess our lives. Many did that during the pandemic lockdown. We need to closely examine our lives and determine what is truly important.

As I age, it becomes clearer every day what is most important in life. Money, prestige, power, fame, and possessions are not where it is at. Instead, it is my relationships I value most. My relationship with God, my relationship with family, my relationship with my brothers and sisters in Christ, and my relationship with friends. This is what truly matters, for they are for eternity.

A fresh start begins by being right with God. We do that by becoming a Christian. The process is simple: We hear the Word (Romans 10:17), we believe the Word (Hebrews 11:6), we repent of our sins (Luke 13:3), we confess Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 10:32), and we are baptized for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38). Upon becoming a Christian, we remain faithful unto death (Revelation 2:10).

Life can be hard. Please do not go it alone. Instead, have joy in your heart by being a child of God with Heaven as your home. Have brothers and sisters in Christ who you can turn to in the storms of life. Let us pursue the things that truly matter: serving God and serving our fellow man.

Where is the Piano?

Do you ever wonder why we, at the church of Christ, do what we do during worship service? If you invite friends to church, the first question may be, “Where is the piano”? Others might ask where is the band, choir, strobe lights or smoke? Why is your preacher not called reverend or pastor? Why do you sing without any musical instruments? Why do you observe communion every Sunday? Why is baptism necessary for salvation? Why do you baptize by immersion? Why are women not serving during worship service?

These are some questions commonly asked by visitors unfamiliar with the Lord’s church. They are very good questions which deserve a proper and respectful answer. Peter said, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).

As Christians, we need to be able to explain why we do what we do by going to the Bible and giving book, chapter, and verse. We need to show from the Scriptures how to become a Christian. We need to show from the Bible the acts of worship. We need to show from the Bible what dispensation we live in. We need to show from the Bible how to live as a Christian.

Friends are you able to do this? Can you help lead someone to Christ? Can you answer the questions in the first paragraph to a visitor? We need to understand from the Bible why we do what we do. We need to be teaching our children and grandchildren these important truths.

Let us follow the example of 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”.

Sin Is Sin

Do you ever wonder what is happening to our nation and more importantly to those who call themselves Christians? People do not want to label anything a sin. Instead many call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20).

Several groups have splintered off from the Lord’s church since the mid-1800s in America. One is the Disciples of Christ. They split from the church of Christ and had their first national convention in 1849 where the American Christian Missionary Society was formed. There are currently approximately 3,800 congregations and 834,000 members.

At a convention in 2013, this was their decision: “Our resolution is about welcoming everyone to the Lord's Table in the way God welcomes each and every one of God's children into God's embrace regardless of creed, race, ability or any other wall that divides," said Cherilyn Williams, a member of the Marketing and Communications team at Disciples of Christ, to The Christian Post.

According to a statement, the resolution also affirms the "faith, baptism and spiritual gifts of all Christians regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity" and states that neither is "grounds for exclusion from fellowship or service within the church." The article’s headline was “Disciples of Christ Church Votes to Affirm Homosexuality, Transgenderism; Allows Openly Gay Leaders” (The Christian Post, Jessica Martinez).

This is a classic example of adding “political correctness” to religion. A convention, council, or board does not get to decide what is right and what is wrong in the eyes of God. The standard and only standard in religion is the Holy Bible. We have no authority to vote on who is added to a congregation. Only the Lord adds to His church (Acts 2:47).

Pressure continues to build on us who refuse to acknowledge the LGBTQ movement by allowing those who practice such to become members and take on leadership roles. Tongues wag as we refuse instrumental music and do not allow our ladies to have leadership roles in general assembly worship. Condemnation is heaped upon us because we cling to the New Testament and refuse to accept the “sinner’s prayer” as an alternative to Scriptural baptism.

Stand firm my fellow Christians! Resist the Devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7). Do not compromise your faith! Sin is still sin regardless of what man says.

A New Season

A new season is upon us, Fall. I am so ready for cooler weather and the cold front which came in last Tuesday evening has brought delightful and dry air (no more high humidity). After a long, hot summer, fall is a breath of fresh air. Fall is a time of football games, softball games, tailgating, hunting, and one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving.

Fall is also a time of rushing off to the game, flying to the deer stand, and speeding off to the mall to get Christmas gifts. Did you notice the verbs: rushing, flying, and speeding? They are not by accident. We need to be careful we do not get so busy and rushing around that we lose our focus of what is important: doing the will of God (Matthew 7:21).

Excuses are often made for not attending the assemblies: I was off at the camp and we are in the middle of nowhere. I hate the games or practices are on Sunday, but we have a good shot at state. I will never forget a proud dad telling me his son scored two touchdowns in “pee wee” football on Sunday morning. It did not bother him in the least “pee wee” ball was more important to him than attending services on the Lord’s Day.

We need to rethink what we are doing and the example we are setting for our young folks. I love sports and outdoor activities as much as anyone, but that should not come between God and me. Each of us must make a choice: God or the world (Joshua 24:14,15). Many refuse to choose, not realizing that is a choice- one must choose to believe and obey the gospel of Jesus. It does not come by osmosis.

As we enter one of my two favorite seasons (spring is the other), let us slow down and take time to enjoy all the rich blessings we have in Jesus. Let us slow down and enjoy family time. Let us slow down and enjoy time with our friends. Let us slow down and enjoy time with our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.

Growing Riches

Our world is fascinated and fixated on growing riches. We want healthy savings accounts, plenty of disposable dough in our checking accounts, and skyrocketing 401K retirement accounts. To achieve these ends, many work long hours, take unnecessary financial risks, and do whatever is necessary to climb the corporate ladder to success.

Sadly, some practically sell their souls to the devil to get rich. Hundreds of books have been written about get rich schemes. “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided? So is he who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:20,21).

It is not good for us to lay treasure up for ourselves and not be rich toward God. How do we become rich toward God? How can we have a bank account in Heaven (Matthew 6:20)? What can we do?

We grow rich towards God by the works we do! We hear the good news about Jesus Christ and obey His gospel (Romans 1:16,17). 1 Timothy 6:18,19 teaches, “Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life”. As Christians, we have healthy spiritual bank accounts by doing good to all, especially to those of the household of God (Galatians 6:10). We speak as we should and help others because we love God and we love our fellow man.

Smyrna was one of two congregations Jesus did not find fault with in the book of Revelation (Philadelphia was the other). Note what Jesus says about Smyrna, “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan”. Jesus declares Smyrna to be materially poor (little money or possessions), but spiritually rich. Why? This congregation has works of faith, this congregation was persecuted but did not quit, and this congregation chose to be rich towards God rather than rich towards themselves.

May we all take heed and be as the Smyrna congregation.

A Time of Refreshing

These last few mornings have been a time of refreshing for me. Tuesday morning when I was out early, it was 61 degrees. The wind was blowing, and it was a delight to be doing farm chores in this delightful prelude to fall weather. The cool air invigorated me and so refreshed my spirits after a long, hot summer.

Friends, we all need our spirits and souls refreshed from this world in which we live. The struggles of life, hardships of work, pain from disease, and the grief of the loss of a loved one takes a tremendous toll on out mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. Where do we go to get relief?

Acts 3:19 teaches, “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord”. Notice “times of refreshing comes from the presence of the Lord”. We get right with God by believing and obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ. We come into those refreshing times by being forgiven of our sins. We stay refreshed and are renewed day by day by staying in communication with God in our prayers and in reading and meditating upon the Word found in our Bibles.

What about you? Do you enjoy reading your Bible? Is prayer and meditation on God’s Holy Word a joy to you? In the beginning, it may seem difficult or arduous to do. With practice and a good attitude, prayer and reading the Bible will become a joy you will not want to miss out on. The Battles We Face in America

As I write this, Hurricane Ida has devastated southeast Louisiana and parts of Mississippi. It will be months before all electricity is restored and years before the damage is totally repaired. One of the worst wildfire seasons in history is causing massive damage in the west. The pandemic is raging as we continue to go through life as best we can. Afghanistan is on our minds as we exit out and try to carry our citizens and supporters with us.

These are terrible things we are dealing with! Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved and affected by these calamities. Yet, this is not America’s greatest problem. Our number one issue is sin. As a nation, we have left our God! We have implemented and made law legal abortions, legal same sex marriages, and legal LBGQT issues. We promote gambling to fund our educational systems. Alcohol and illicit drug use are rampant.

There are 14.5 million alcoholics in the United States today (no longer called alcoholism but alcohol use disorder). There are 31.9 million illegal drug addicts in the U.S. today. Alcoholics and drug addicts total combined are 46.4 million. We have failed to mention our obsession with pornography. Forty million Americans regularly visit these sites.

We watch in unbelief at the actions of our government officials in Washington and the decisions they make. We begin to wonder about the future of our nation. We ask: “Is God bringing judgment on our land because of our wickedness”.

As Christians, we know God is in control and those who practice sin will answer for it. We, as a nation, need to go back to the old paths, seek God, and walk in His ways (Jeremiah 6:16). We cannot change what the heathen, ungodly, and morally corrupt do. We can change what we do and cry out to God to restore this land. We can make certain we are Christians and that we are letting our lights shine bright in this dark landscape. We can teach our children and grandchildren and all who will listen to seek the Lord and live under His rule.

2 Chronicles 7:14 gives us the remedy. How I pray America would listen! “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land”.

Our Attitude

Friends, with all the chaos going on in the world today, we realize just how little we have control over. There is one thing we can take charge of and that’s our attitude. Are we going to look on the positives in our lives or focus on the negatives in our lives? We all have blessings and we all have problems and difficulties.

May I suggest we count our blessings and be thankful and praise God for them. Concerning our challenges, I recommend we confront them, seek methods to solve them (if possible), do what we can, and turn them over to God (1 Peter 5:7). Let God be God and do not take these burdens back but pray for wisdom, strength, and God to handle them.

The Bible has much to say about our attitude. “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). Ephesians 4:22-24, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (emphasis mine).

As Christians, we are to shine as lights in this dark world (Matthew 5:16; Philippians 2:15). Sadly, we often become affected and infected by the worries, problems, and troubles of this world to the point where we are no longer effective for Jesus. Our light grows dimmer as we are beset by worldly evils.

Let us renew our minds by reading God’s word, praying, watching and reading wholesome programs and books, and hanging out with fellow Christians. Paul said it best, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2).

Today, let us renew our minds and watch our attitudes. Let us be “Christ like” in all we think, in all we do, and in all we say.

Where Do You Go?

I was talking to someone the other day and he was very upset by the things happening in America and the world. The raging pandemic, the takeover by the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the divisiveness in the United States were clearly taking a toll. He stated it was all “very depressing”.

I told my friend I certainly understood but we need to remember God is in total control. God causes nations to rise, and God causes nations to fall. My friend was taken aback by my statements. There was silence and I am not certain he really believed my comments.

World events are alarming, and many people are filled with dread. When the bad times come, where do you go? Where do you go for peace? Where do you go while the storms rage? Where do you go for comfort?

Government leaders want you to trust in them to take care of you and provide for your needs. Many decide they cannot trust anyone but themselves. Others trust in their possessions as a means of solstice.

Friends, the government, ourselves, and our possessions are not the solution to the turbulence in America and the world. Only God can provide the answer. As a nation, we need to go to the Lord and do it His way.

We must become Christians by believing and obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ. As Christians, we must obey Jesus by following His commandments (John 14:15, 15:14, and 12:48). We need to stand up and help others “see the Light” (John 8:12). We need to understand we will suffer and have tribulations in this world, but we are to stay faithful to the end (John 16:33, 2 Timothy 3:12, Revelation 2:10).

Where do we go? We go to the Lord. “For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Also remember the Lord’s invitation: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28,29).

Jesus is the only answer for our sin sick violent world.

A Time to Reflect

As Christians, we need to spend time to reflect upon our lives. There are several reasons for this. One is to make sure we are living according to God’s word (2 Corinthians 13:5). This is vital because we must be doers and not simply hearers of the Word (James 1:22).

Second, it allows us to note areas we have done well in and areas in need of improvement. We may not have even realized we had sinned or made a blunder until we go over the day in our mind. We ask our-selves questions such as: What did I do right today? Do I owe anyone an apology? Did I exemplify Christ in my actions and words today? Could have I handled a situation better? Reflecting on these questions allows us to grow spiritually and become a more pleasing child of God (James 3:17,18).

Third, reflection on God’s word allows the Word to speak to us, guide us, and infuse us (Hebrews 4:12). This has a tremendous effect on us as we “grow in the pure milk of the word” (1 Peter 2:2). The word enables us to grow in our faith and become ever more pleasing to God (Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:6).

Reflecting upon our past and our day’s activities is good medicine for us if done in this vane. Let us learn from our past- the good, not so good, and the bad. Let us strive to move forward beginning a new day in Christ Jesus. Let us move forward with these lessons learn and be kind to one another (that includes ourselves).

If you ever want to hear a haunting song, please listen to “Reflections of My Life” by Marmalade. The song came out in 1970 when the Vietnam war was raging, riots were rampant, and people were fed up with so many things. It became an instant hit especially among Vietnam veterans. The most notable lyric: “The world is a bad place, a bad place, a terrible place to live, but oh I don’t want to die”. God, and only God, has the answer for this sin filled world.

May God be with you as we reflect on our lives and seek to bring honor and glory to Him.

Finding Peace in Life's Storms

2020 was a challenging year! We all know people who died of COVID and were infected with the virus. Many of us have had the virus. 2021 was the year of change! The vaccine was rolled out and millions were vaccinated. Life was returning to normal, church services and fellowship meals were back, and all seemed right with the world.

Then, we started hearing of the delta variant and things changed for the worse. Hospitals are filling up and Louisiana is at the forefront of the pandemic as the fourth wave surges. Governor Edwards has reinstated a mask mandate thru early September. School is about to start back, and district are scrambling with proper protocols and procedures. The economy was off to a roaring reset and now may waiver once more.

Hurricane season is ramping up and we all remember the devastation we suffered last year. Our country is deeply divided politically and our government over the past five decades has made law many things contrary to God and His word. Morality waivers and violence is rampant.

As Christians, how do we deal with this? Where do we go to find peace? How do we keep our family out of this chaos?

Remember dear friends, God is in control. God is not asleep nor is He slumbering! Our God knows exactly what He is doing and has a plan to accomplish His perfect will. Habakkuk was equally dismayed and astonished at what was going on with Judah over 2400 years ago. Please read this wonderful three-chapter Old Testament book to give you a totally new perspective on life.

God declares, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). As Christians, by faith we know God has our hand and is in control. We will suffer things on this earth, but we will be victorious through Jesus Christ our Savior (2 Timothy 3:12; Revelation 2:10). Stay the course and stay at peace my friend. God has your back!

Muzzling Our Mouths

Dear friends, we are all aware of how our mouths can get us into trouble. We are angry and say things we do not mean. We inadvertently spill the beans about something we were not to tell others. We become upset by another’s actions and start bad mouthing them. We find out some juicy information and start gossiping about it. We do not like someone, and we start murmuring about them.

The Bible teaches all of the above actions are wrong. We are to bridle our tongues (James 1:26). Jesus taught, “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man” (Matthew 15:18). Our mouths reflect what is going on inside of us. As Christians we are to use our mouths to tell others about Jesus, to encourage, to exhort, and to extoll what is good. Paul put it this way, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29).

In our Wednesday night Bible class of July 21, Heather Barnhill made a profound statement that resonated with me concerning our words. She stated we need to ask ourselves three questions before we speak: Is it the truth? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

Think about the misery we could avoid if we answered these three simple questions! If is not true, do not say it. Please think of all the divisions, strife, and quarrels that result from folks speaking whatever enters their heads without considering the consequences. These three questions will help us in deciding when to speak and when to remain silent.

The Bible says it best, “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19).

Hope for You and Me

Dear friends, how would you define hope? The dictionary states that hope can be a noun or a

verb. As a noun, hope means “the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will

turn out for the best”. As a verb, hope means, “to look forward to with desire and reasonable

confidence; to believe, desire, or trust” (definitions from dictionary.com).

What does the Bible tell us? The word “hope” is found 151 times in the NKJV.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God;

For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God” (Psalm 42:11). Trusting

in God for our salvation, for our strength, for our guidance, and for our eternal reward gives us

what we need to survive and thrive in this challenging world in which we live.

So often, life disappoints us through friends who are not what they seem, jobs that bring heartache rather than satisfaction, material things that breakdown, and the choices we make that turn out wrong. It is not so with God. Romans 5;5 tells us our hope in God does not disappoint.

We love reading the Bible because it gives us instruction, comfort, and hope. Please note

Romans 15:4, “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we

through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope”.

Our hope is in our God through His Son, Jesus Christ. We have hope (blessed assurance) that

if we have believed and obeyed the gospel of Jesus, we are saved and have eternal life as we

continue to stay faithful in Jesus (Ephesians 1:22,23).

Dear friends, what about you? Where is your hope at? In yourself? In the world? Why not put

your hope in the One who never disappoints?

The Greatest App

Today there are all kinds of apps people download to their smart phones. There are weather

apps, fitness apps, news apps, sports apps, and hobby apps. The list is endless. Many are just

for fun, but some can save your life. Examples of these are weather apps warning of severe

weather and certain health apps warning of irregular heartbeat or blood sugar or pressure

spikes.

What does app stand for? It stands for application. We have available for us today the

greatest APP ever- God’s Holy Word-the Bible. Many have the Bible downloaded on their

phones. At assembly time, folks will pull up their favorite translation as the lesson begins.

Apps and smart phones can be such a blessing in our lives if used properly.

There are two things we as Christians need to remember about the Bible. First, we must

know God’s word. 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us, “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a

workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”. Second, we

must put application to our knowledge of the Word. Jesus said we are His friends if we obey

Him and that if we love Him, we will do whatever He commands (John 14:15; John 15:14).

It disturbs me that so many claim to be Christians and yet do not apply God’s word to their

lives. Jesus proclaimed by their fruits you will know them (Matthew 7:15-17). On Judgment

Day, many are going to be horrified because they did not obey the gospel of Jesus Christ

(2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).

Do not be deceived dear friends. We cannot live for God and live for the world (Matthew

6:24; 1 John 2:15,16). We cannot forsake the assembling of the saints (Hebrews 10:25). We

cannot use improper language and coarse jesting (James 3:1-12). We cannot be immoral

people (1 Corinthians 6:18-20). We cannot neglect God’s word, or our prayer lives (John

12:48; 1 Thessalonians 5:17).

What about you dear friend? Are you making proper application of God’s word to your life?

How will you answer when you stand before Jesus on Judgment Day?

God's Word

I noted a message on a congregation’s sign this week which read: “Do not master the Word but be mastered by the Word”. This message struck home with me.

So many today want to add to, delete, or twist the Holy Scriptures to please themselves and

their personal agendas (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; 2 Peter 3:16; Revelation 22:18,19).

Think of all the perversions to the precious gospel of Jesus Christ that have occurred because

of man’s ego and lust for power, fortune, and fame (Matthew 15:9; Galatians 1:6-9).

God knew men would fall from the faith and pursue these “doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy

4:1). We do not like confrontation, but we must stand for the truth (Ephesians 6:14). As

Christians, we must proclaim the Word boldly (Acts 4:13,29). In a kind and loving way, we

must confront error with the truth. Souls are at stake because people have bought into these

false doctrines such as: baptism is not necessary, once saved, always saved, instrumental

music is fine, women preachers are great, the Lord’s Supper is not necessary on the Lord’s

Day, there is no Hell, attending the assemblies is not required, and obedience to God’s word is

unnecessary because we are saved by grace. These doctrines are heresy and a perversion of

God’s word.

These mentioned false doctrines are believed and are practiced by millions in America today.

Friends, we have the truth. Let us stand in the truth. Let us proclaim the truth. Let us revel in

the truth. Let us love the truth. Let us never be ashamed of the truth.

Jesus taught, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know

the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31,32; emphasis added mine).

The 4th of July

Sunday is the Fourth of July which has been declared a federal holiday since 1941. We

remember the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence from the British empire.

These men risked everything by signing this document. Many thought they were signing their

death warrant and they were.

Five of the signers were captured by the British and killed. Twelve had their homes burned.

Two had their sons killed by the British. Nine died fighting in the American Revolutionary

War. That is 28 of the men representing fifty per cent of those who signed the document.

These men were willing to risk it all for what they believed. The Christians of the first century

were the same. They lost their homes, jobs, and possessions because they followed Jesus.

Many lost their lives because they refused to proclaim Caesar as lord. Despite all the dangers,

“they went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4).

We are so fortunate in America today. We can currently worship God without fear of

persecution or arrest. That may change one day. If so, we must follow the example of those

before us and stay the course. Peter said, “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

As we celebrate our “Independence Day”, let us remember as Christians Who has truly set us

free- Christ Jesus. Romans 8:2 proclaims, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has

made me free from the law of sin and death”. Jesus came to this earth to do what we could not do for ourselves: set us free from sin. Jesus gives us this wonderful blessing in John 8:36,

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed”. Let us rejoice and stand in

this precious freedom.

Rest

I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth” (Psalms 121:1,2).

I love this verse because it reminds me that I do not need to stress, worry, or fear during my stay hear on earth. As a Christian, I know God has my back. Having said that, why do we continue to be stressed out? Why do we become frustrated if our plans do not come to fruition the way we planned? Why is there no internal peace?

The answers may be as complex and varied as the different vehicles we encounter on the highway. I offer a different solution. Perhaps it is because we have never really relinquished control over to God. Like Burger King’s ad, we want it “our way”. We expect God to direct us in the way we want. We desire God to answer our prayers like we want. We expect the world to go like we want.

Do you see a pattern here? Perhaps, we are afraid of losing control. Maybe, we are concerned

God will ask something of us we do not want to do. Friends, God is a loving God. As Christians, His Son Jesus has promised to be with us every step of the way (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5).

The only way to serenity is through Jesus. Today, let us resolve to stop the worry and the fret.

Today, let us determine we are turning it all over to God and putting everything in His hands.

Today, let us do God’s will and seek His help in all we do.

I struggle with this as much as you do. All of us need to daily strengthen ourselves to follow Jesus. Jesus invited us with these remarkable verses: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew11:28-30).

Father's Day

Moms and dads play such an important role in their children’s lives. We celebrated Mother’s Day last month and now dads have their turn. My dad died in December of 1993 and there is not a day goes by that I do not miss him. He was a quiet, unassuming World War II veteran who was wounded three times. He was also an expert horseman and almost every day, I remark to Karen how I wish he were here to give me advice on our farm and ride with me on my rounds.

Charles Hodge, a faithful preacher, remarked “parents who are fortunate enough in the kind of children they have, have children who are fortunate in the kind of parents they have”. My dad was and is a blessing to me.

The Bible teaches, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Paul writes, “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged” (Colossians 3:21).

Dads have an awesome responsibility to raise our children up to become Christians. We are charged with seeing our children learn of God, Jesus, and the Holy Scriptures. We are tasked with making sure our children attend the services. We are to be the head of the house and work with our spouses to ensure our children have a loving home.

This Father’s Day, let us strive to be the dads God wants us to be. Let us be loving fathers to our children and caring husbands to our wives. Let us honor our dads with love and respect on this special day.

Which Direction?

As I made my travels this week, I discovered an incredibly sad thing. A congregation’s building where Karen and I had attended a gospel meeting in 2002 had been abandoned. The sign was removed from its moorings and a new realtor “for sale” sign was prominently displayed. We knew back 19 years ago the congregation was small (about 30 or so members), but we had no idea it had collapsed.

Over the course of my travels in north and central Louisiana, I have witnessed many congregations that have ceased to exist and all that remains is a slowly deteriorating building. Congregations such as Newellton, Sicily Island, Clayton, Luna, Rt. 3, Bernice, Jonesville, Olla, Hwy 80, and CenLa are no more. Many others are teetering on the brink (at least 5 right here in our area).

We must ask, “What happened”? Why did this once vibrant congregation of the Lord’s church simply melt away? Where have all the members gone? Are they still holding to the truth of God’s word wherever they are?

There are no easy, quick answers. Sometimes there is a split and people go elsewhere. Perhaps, the congregation was “inward focused” and through attrition such as death, old age, and people moving, there were simply too few to keep the doors open. Maybe, there were financial issues, and the congregation could not meet its obligations, and was forced to sell the property.

How do we safeguard our congregation? By staying true to God’s word! We are to be “outward focused” by seeking the lost and looking for opportunities to do good to all especially to the household of faith (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15,16; Galatians 6:10). We are to preach the truth and the whole counsel of God (2 Timothy 4:2,3; Acts 20:27). We are to love one another and esteem others more than ourselves (John 13:34,35; Philippians 2:3). We are to support our elders, deacons, and our congregation (1 Timothy 5:17; 1 Peter 5:5). We are to teach our young people about the Lord and His church (Ephesians 6:4; 2 Timothy 3:15).

We are on the cusp of great things here at Naff Avenue! Let us always stand for the truth and serve God and others. May our love for the Lord and one another be made known to all.

A Word

Dear friends, if you could say just a few words to someone, what would they be? Perhaps to

a family member or dear friend, it would simply be: “I love you “or “Thank you for being

such an important part of my life”. Our words to a brother or sister in Christ, might be: “I

care for you” or “You are such an encouragement to me”. What would we say to a casual

acquaintance? Perhaps, “Thanks for being here” or “How may I help you”?

It is vital we build up and encourage one another with our words and actions. There is so

much hurt and discouragement in the world today! One of the things I love most about the

Naff Avenue congregation is the love and kindness you show towards one other. I do not

detect any resentment, bitterness, or spirit of divisiveness among you. What a blessing this

is to all of us! This love and willingness to work together for the Lord and His church

makes the elders and deacons job so much easier. You are to be commended for this. You

are such a joy to Karen and me.

We are growing here at Naff Avenue. I see our love for God, love for the truth, and love for

one another increasing. I see our work for the Lord, our desire to reach out in the community, and to help those in need growing. When visitors attend (which is almost every Lord’s

Day), I love to watch you as you interact with them, encourage them, and let them know

they are welcome here.

Paul words praising the congregation at Thessalonica reminds me of you, “We are bound to

thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly,

and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other” (2 Thessalonians 1:3). May

we all set our minds and hearts on continuing to love one another, to speak the truth, and to

tell others about the Lord and His church.

A Memorial

Monday, May 31, 2021 is Memorial Day here in America. For many, this is simply a day

off from work. Others see it as a day to have fun with family and friends while grilling

hamburgers and hotdogs. The unofficial start to summer and vacations is another view

taken by many.

What is Memorial Day about? It was originally known as Decoration Day and began in the

South as early as June 3, 1861 when a Confederate soldier’s grave was “decorated” with

flowers. The idea caught on in both the North and the South as graves of fallen Civil War

soldiers were “decorated” with flowers to honor and remember their sacrifice. Memorial

Day became a federal holiday in 1971 and is observed on the last Monday in the month of

May. The day is to honor all United States servicemen who died in the line of duty.

As Christians, we are thankful for the ultimate sacrifice these men and women made so we

can live free. One of our most cherished freedoms is the right to worship God without fear

of arrest and persecution. What a blessing this is! We can assembly on the Lord’s Day and

worship according to the New Testament (John 4:23,24) without fear of reprisal. We can

sing, give our contribution to God, pray, hear preaching with God’s word proclaimed, and

observe The Lord’s Supper as a memorial of what Jesus did for us on that cross (Luke

22:19,20; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

This Memorial Day weekend, let us enjoy time off with friends and family as we partake of

good food and fellowship. Let us remember and honor all of those who gave their lives for

our freedom. Let us today, on this Lord’s Day, remember the love Jesus had for us and the

supreme sacrifice He made on that cross so long ago for you and me (Romans 5:8).

Staying Focused

The other day, I noted this church sign: “Cross eyed people have the best vision”. I

pondered the message as I continued to drive and thought about its implications for our

lives. I realized more than ever, we need to be living with our eyes focused on Jesus and

what He went through for us on that cross. Jesus needs to be the top priority.

Paul proclaimed, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ

lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who

loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

Yet, America and the world are so trying to get Jesus out of the picture. In our federal

government today, prayers to God are not concluded in Jesus’s name because that would be offensive to other religions. Jesus stated, “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in

this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He

comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38).

All my life, B.C. was used to note “before Christ” and A.D. was for “anno domini” which

means “in the year of our Lord”. This is how time was marked: counting toward Jesus’s

coming to earth and after Jesus’s birth. Now, this is not politically correct and is being

replaced by B.C.E. (before common era) and C.E. (common era). I researched “the why”

and discovered it was to remove Jesus from the world’s marking of time.

“The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and have done

abominable iniquity; There is none who does good” (Psalms 53:1). Paul in Romans 1:21

noted, “because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were

thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened”.

Let us make sure we stay “cross eyed” and not lose our focus in this perverse, crooked

world.

Satan is Alive and Well

This week, in having some neighbors over, I was reminded just how much Satan is alive and well. Our friends related what is going on at a local school in our community: girls deciding they “like girls” and having them for “girlfriends” openly at the school. Karen and I were shocked at this revelation. We simply could not believe this was happening and beginning as young as 5th graders at the school.

What has happened to our community? Our region? Our state? Our nation? How did we go from the Bible being read in school, public prayer in school, and the pledge of allegiance in school to this?

These evils did not occur over night, but were (and are) sly, carefully crafted plans by Satan to

destroy us. Evolution is taught as fact, alternate lifestyles are promoted, tolerance demanded

(except towards God and the Bible), and abortion is taught as a means of birth control. Is it any wonder teen suicides are rising, depression is rampant, and many young people express a sense of hopelessness?

What can we as Christians do? We need to discover what is going on in our children’s schools and demand necessary changes if warranted. If the school refuses our requests, we need to take it up with the school board. If no results, we may want to consider private Christian schools, home-schooling, or virtual learning as alternatives. Our children are worth it.

We need to pray everyday for our young people and our nation. We need to vote for candidates who do not support abortion, same-sex unions, and evolution. We need to be teaching our young people right from wrong, to love God, and to stay true to His word. We need to write or telephone our elected officials and let them know our concerns. Above all else, we need to stand as “children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life” (Philippians 2:15b,16a).

Please do not despair but rise and do battle with Satan and his evil forces by wearing the full armor of God and using the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:10-18). May God be with us in this epic struggle between good and evil; between God and Satan.

To Die For

We have all heard and perhaps used the expression "to die for". For example: the chocolate cake was "to die for" or the new supervisor's position is "to die for". "To die for" means excellent, beautiful, or something that is strongly desired and sought after.

What about our Christian faith? Is it "to die for"? Is following Jesus something we strongly desire and put at the forefront of our lives?

"To die for" Christ, we must die to ourselves. God's will is to be first in our lives, not ours (Matthew 7:21). Jesus taught we are to deny ourselves and follow Him (Luke 9:23). Paul proclaimed, "For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord's (Romans 14:8). Our thoughts and actions are to bring honor and glory to God, not ourselves. Our order of priority is: God, others, self.

"To die for" Christ, we must die to sin. Romans chapter 6 goes into great detail about this stating: "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it" (Romans 6:1,2)? We are not to continue in, dabble in, or continue in sin. As Christians, we are to "walk in the newness of life" (Romans 6:4b).

"To die for" Christ means we must die in the Lord. Revelation 14:13 teaches, "Write: 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.' Yes, says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them". We are to stay faithful unto death (Revelation 2:10). No matter how well we start off, if we do not finish our Christian walk with Jesus, we are lost. Just like in a race, you must abide by the rules and finish the course. So it is with Christianity. We have to stay strong and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and the prize that awaits (Hebrews 12:1-3).

Dear friends, I urge us to "die for Christ". Let us make the necessary adjustments and to seek God first and foremost.

Let us determine to run the race set before us and stay faithful to the end. We will never regret it.

Let Love Define Us

George Harrison wrote a song entitled, "What is Life" that was recorded in 1970 and released in America in February 1971. The song became a smash hit. Part of the lyrics are: "Tell me, what is my life without your love, Tell me, who am I without you by my side". I must admit, I loved the song back then and still do to this day.

Most folks realize the importance of love in their lives. I cannot imagine a life without love in it. We have spouses, children, grandchildren, family, and friends we dearly love. Many have pets they love and cherish. We all have this deep need to love some living creature and to be loved back.

Sadly, we often do not see loved displayed in the world. Wars occur where lives are taken and unspeakable atrocities are carried out on innocent men, women, and children. In politics, party affiliation is often demonstrated by hatred and contempt for the other side. In Ireland, India, Africa, and other countries, citizens are killed simply because of different religious beliefs.

Here is the United States, racial tension, crime, and political unrest result in deaths, riots, looting, and mayhem. As Christians, we can be swept away in the emotional fallout and develop resentment, bitterness, and even hatred. Jesus instructed us to let love define us (Matthew 5:43-46). Early Christians lived under pagan Roman emperors, corrupt government officials, tax collectors who overcharged, and Jews who hated Christians. Yet, in this evil, hate filled environment, Jesus said, we are to love our enemies and do good to those who hate and misuse us.

I know many things are occurring in America we do not understand, but God is in control today just like He was in the first century. Please do not let current events or worldly people skew your Christian perspective. We are to love God and love our fellow man.

The apostle John put it this way, "For this is the message you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another" (1 John 3:11). Brothers and sister, let love for God, His commandments, and others truly be what defines us. In doing this, we will truly shine as stars in this crooked and perverse generation (Philippians 2:15).

The Word of God

This time of year, I love listening to the sound of tanagers in the trees. I can think of no bird that makes a more beautiful song. This melody, along with the gentle fresh April breeze, makes mornings special for me. Sadly, as spring gives way to summer so goes the tanagers and the cool spring breeze.

Few things in this life are constant and a sure thing. One exception is God and His word! Isaiah 40:8 teaches, "The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever". I long for things that do not change. Things I can depend on when adverse circumstances occur or bad news is received. That is where God and His word come in (Malachi 3:6).

God's word is consistent and is a great source of instruction, wisdom, comfort, and joy. The Bible teaches me the plan of salvation, how to worship God, and how to live my life (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:16; Romans 6:1-9; 2 Timothy 3:16,17).

The Scriptures also proclaim to us how the world began, what happened, and what is going to happen when Jesus returns.

168,000 Bibles are sold or given away everyday in America! That amounts to 20 million Bibles sold in the United States. Then, why is there dust on so many Bibles? Do we fail to comprehend the importance of this wonderful Book?

We have time for TV, sports, hunting, fishing, golf, and vacations. What about God's word? Where does reading your Bible fit in your daily schedule? A detailed study released by Amy Watson from statistical research she conducted from 2018-2020 indicates only 9% of Americans read their Bibles everyday. We are not talking chapters per day, but reading just a few verses were counted as reading for that day.

Friends, how can we obey Jesus (John12:48, 14:15, 15:14) if we do not know what He said and commanded us to do? How can we refute false doctrine if we do not know true doctrine? How can we help someone to Jesus if we do not know where the plan of salvation is in the Bible?

Thoughts to ponder.

Forbearance

Do you use the word forbearance and forbearing very often in your speech? Neither do I. Forbearance means the ability to endure difficult circumstances and may involve perseverance in the face of delay. It is the tolerance of provocation without responding in disrespect/anger; especially when faced with longer-term difficulties” (Wikipedia, 2021).

Forbearance is found twice in the KJV of the Bible and forbearing is found five times. Forbearance is something we as Christians are commanded to do. Ephesians 4:2 tells us, “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love”. We are to have patience with one another, overlook slights, and even when provoked, not be willing to retaliate. This is not easy to do, but Christianity is not about the easy path. Remember Jesus as He was dying on the cross, prayed: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Colossians 3:13 ties forbearing with forgiveness: “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye”. Again, we are to follow the example Jesus set for us: to be patient even under difficult circumstances and to forgive one another. Bitterness and hard feelings are not to be part of our lives. We need to let go and let God.

Forbearance is used twice in describing God. In Romans 2:4 we read, “or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance”? Here we see the forbearance (patience) of God in delaying punishment for our sins, thereby giving us the opportunity to repent.

A similar idea is noted in romans 3:24,25, “being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God”.

Friends, let us become more as God desires us to be, forbearing with one another as we grow in love in obedience to God’s Word. How many arguments, hard feelings, and divisions could be avoided if we followed this?

Where the Heart Is

Have you ever heard someone say, “He is just going through the motions, his heart is not in it”? What does this mean? It means that individual is not giving it (whatever it is) his full effort, his undivided attention.

There may be a range of reasons why this is occurring. He could have lost interest, be discouraged by his prior performances, or being forced to do something he does not want to do. Whatever the reason is, his heart is simply not in it anymore. The results are usually mediocre at best whether it be a sport, a job, or a hobby.

God wants our full attention and devotion to Him. “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Paul is instructing the Galatians and us, that as Christians, we no longer live for ourselves, but live to bring glory and honor to Jesus. We do this because of our love for Jesus who loved us and gave Himself for our sins on that cross.

When our heart is focused on our Lord, things change. We seek opportunities to help others, to speak encouraging words, and to share the reason for our hope. Life is satisfying because we have a purpose and are part of the most important work in the world. We rest our heads at night knowing we are making a difference because we are doing God’s work.

Jesus put it this way, “When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:34,35).

Friends, let us give God our whole heart and focus on doing the things that please Him. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

Spring

As the song goes, “spring is in the air”. I love spring because it is a time of renewal and vitality. After 3 months of cold with snow and ice, spring is a welcome change. The birds are busy building nests and hatching little ones. The trees are adorned with fresh new leaves and flowers and shrubs such as azaleas are now in full bloom. People are taking picnics and planning spring getaways to the great outdoors.

Spring is also the time when Easter arrives. Today, April 4th, is “Easter Sunday”. It is a time when the world stops and reflects on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This same Jesus Who went through some much in the last week of His life here on earth (Matthew 21-27; Mark 11-15; Luke 19-23; John 12-19). Isaiah prophesied, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, everyone, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:5,6).

Friends, Jesus took on all our sins while on His cross, so we would have the opportunity to be saved from our sins. He bore it all for us so we could walk in the “newness of life” when we believe and obey His gospel (Romans 6:4; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Jesus died on that cross and was placed in a tomb, but the story does not end there! On the third day, He arose! If Jesus had not risen from the grave, we would have no hope (1 Corinthians 15:14-19). Listen to the wonderful news found in 1 Corinthians 15:20-22, “But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive”.

That my friends is great news in the spring and anytime of the year. May we always be grateful for what Jesus did for us.

Marriage

“As the family goes, so goes the nation”. The family is the backbone of any society. The Roman empire fell in large part due to the breakup of the home. Immorality, divorce, and perversions were rampant in that culture. Sadly, the same is true in America today.

The three most important decisions an individual makes: the decision to become a Christian, the decision to remain faithful as a Christian, and the decision as to whom one will marry. Have you ever wondered why at a wedding the minister says, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here this day to unite in holy matrimony this man and this woman”? It is because marriage is a divine institution declared by God Himself (Malachi 2:11). Marriage is a covenant between one man, one woman, and God, with God as the Head (Malachi 2:14; Matthew 19:4-6).

Despite what the law of the land declares legal, there is but one reason (cause) for divorce and that is sexual immorality (fornication) (Matthew 19:9). When Jesus made this statement, it so rattled his disciples they proclaimed, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry” (Matthew 19:10). Please remember God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16; also read Matthew 19:1-9).

Almost 50% (1 in 2) marriages fail in America today for a host of reasons. God calls us to carefully choose our mate. Marrying a person who is not a Christian is not a wise decision (1 Corinthians 7:39; 2 Corinthians 6:14). Before we marry, we need to ask ourselves, “Is this person going to be a help or be a hindrance to me in my walk with the Lord”? If a hindrance, do not marry that individual. Many believe they can change a person after they marry. Sometimes, this is true. Mates have converted their spouses to Christianity, but often the reverse is true. Many have left the faith to please their spouse. That is why marrying a Christian is vital.

Marriage can either be a wonderful blessing or be a terrible existence. My marriage of 40 years has been such a blessing to me. The right Christian spouse makes all the difference. Let us do all we can to be a blessing to our spouse. Let us do all we can to teach and train our children to do likewise.
